MEDFOHD MAIL THlbUNE, MEDFORD. OREGON
Edward Kennedy
Wants To Stay
Out of Limelight
WashingtonfllPD Sen. Ed
ward M. Kennedy (D-Mass.)
savs he'll "stay out of the
swimming pool" to make his
rnnsressional record "as
eood as Vaughn Meadcr's."
The President's youngest
brother and fellow freshmen
members of Congress were
entertained Wednesday night
at a Women's National Press
Club annual fete for newly
elected representatives.
Kennedy. 30. was one of 13
freshmen senators and con
gressmen who were ques
tioned at the dinner about
their relations with the Presi
dent, their legislative goals
and ambitions.
Out of Limelight
in the future. Kennedy
said he wanted to "stay out of
the limelight, out or me neaa
lines, and out of the swim
ming pool." Last summer, at
a party given by Atty. Gen.
and Mrs. Robert F. Kennedy,
some guests, including White
House aide Arthur Schleslin
ger Jr., fell Into the Kennedy
swimming pool.
As for his brother, the
i Massachusetts Democrat said
that after a White House visit
with the President to discuss
ideas for the State of The
Union message, "The only
thing I got out of him was,
'Are you still using that
greasy kid stuff?'"
He quipped that "I've been
helping him for a number of
years, and now I think it's
time he stood on his own
feet."
Record Dropping Urged
Vice president Lyndon B.
Johnson, the guest speaker,
said that the way for a new
congressman to get a reputa
tion of being in the inner
circle was not through the
old method of name dropping.
Record dropping has replaced
this, he said.
As an example of a good
publicity technique, the vice
president pointed to the
"Mona Lisa" approach used
by Sen. Carl Hayden (D
Ariz). "He doesn't admit any
thing, he doesn't deny any
thine. he doesn't say any
thing," Johnson said. "He
lust smiles, and has smiled
fnr vears." and that has led
to Hayden getting some of
the kindest stories written
about a representative on
Canitol Hill. Johnson de
clared.
Seal Belt Measure
Receives Approval
. Salem (DPI) A proposal to
ask the legislature to require
seat bells in cars sold in Ore
gon starting in 1964 was ap
proved Wednesday by the
Oregon Traffic Safety Com
mission. The bill also would require
seat belt attachments for rear
seats in cars. It will be co
sponsored by the Board of
Health.
The commission also ap
proved a motion by director
Vcrn L. Hill of the Motor Ve
hicles Department to seek
periodic motor vehicle inspec
tion. The commission voted In
favor of an increase in funds
for schools offering driver
education. The Increase
would bring the state's con
tribution to 90 per cent of the
cost of the course, up to $50
per pupil, instead of the pres
ent 75 per cent.
The commission voted to
support the present minimum
driver age of 16, reversing
an earlier position that would
have raised the 8ge to 18.

Students Protest
Chapel Attendance
Brunswli-k, Maine - (UPH
Five-hundred students crowd
ed into the Bowdoin College
ehapel Wednesday in protest
of compulsory chapel attend
ance. The chapel seats only 200
and the other 300 sat on the
floor or stood in aisles.
The demonstration, termed
"dignified and good natured."
apparently stemmed from a
notice given to the 800-mcm-ber
student body by Prof. A.
Lcroy Greason Jr., dean of
students.
He said many students
would fall short of minimum
chapel attendance require
ments at the end of the first
semester and It would he
"adequate basis for any later
action."
Seniors arc required to at
tend IS daily and five Sunday
services each semester; Juniors
and sophomores 20 and five
and freshmen 23 and six.
