Facilities To Be
Expanded at Center
Expansion of the rehabili
tation facilities at Hawthorne
Convalescent and Rehabilita
tion center, 625 Stevens ave.,
has been announced by R. D.
Scofield and H. L. Gilbert,
registered physical therapists
in charge of the department.
The additional space and
equipment will give the de
partment a greater capacity
in helping patients to live
with their handicaps and
function to the best of their
ability through reeducating
and retraining of injured ex
tremities, it was explained by
the department heads. The
role of rehabilitation, which
is to prepare injured cases
for vocational training and
change their status from a li
ability to an asset, would be
facilitated by the expansion,
they added.
The Physical Therapy and
Rehabilitation department op
erates as both an in-patient
and out-patient service at
Hawthorne center.
Benson Argues
Conservatism Cause
Boston - DPI) - Former Ag
riculture Secretary Ezra T.
Benson argued the case of
conservatism Sunday at a
"New England rally for God
and country."
Tile day-long rally was at
tended by about 1,000 persons
including Robert Welch,
founder of the John Birch So
ciety and many of its leaders,
although it was not sponsored
by the group.
About 70 persons, many of
them members of the National
Association for the Advance
ment of Colored People, pick
eted outside the Statler-Hilton
Hotel.
Benson, farm secretary in
the Eisenhower administra
tion, spoke for about 90 min
utes on three main topics
the threat of big government,
me danger of appeasement
and the ineffectiveness of the
United Nations.
Tie former cabinet member
has disclaimed membership in
uie Birch Society but says
"some of the finest Americans
know are associated with
it. His son, Reed, is Utah or
ganizer for the society.
