jdared the drug the culprit,
I thousands of expectant wo
men worried about health of
;their offspring.
i One in particular decided
to do something about it. Mrs.
Sherri Finkbine sought legal
permission for an abortion in
her native Arizona, when she
learned she had taken the
drug bought overseas
during the early stage of
Pregnancy.
i Denied permission in this
(Country, she and her husband

performed the operation.

world's most famous women.
Mrs. Franklin D. Roosevelt,

death as a rare type of tuber

died in her Los Angeles home
of an overdose of barbit

This was the year the
flames of the Cuban crisis
burned hottest. Navy wives
and children were moved
from the Guantanamo Naval

White House let their purses

Famlllea Uprooted
In Algeria, European wo.
men who had known no other
home found their families up

its independence. Ten thous

U.S. women proved them
selves excellent if unofficial

the Middle East.
The First Lady,. Jacqueline

The President and Mrs
Kennedy began to build a
new home in Virginia . . ,
and ignored their relatives'
parties that sometimes wound
their guests up in the near
est swimming pool.
Birthday
Caroline observed her fifth
birthday and was thoroughly
unimpressed when she met
Col. John H. Glenn, Jr., the
astronaut who orbited the
earth three times.
"Where," Caroline asked
the space pioneer, "is the
monkey?"
Her brother, John, Jr., ob
served his second birthday.
It was a busy 1962 also for
Britain's first family. Queen
Elizabeth II celebrated her
10th anniversary as ruler, and
her 33th birthday. She and
her husband, Prince Philip,
observed their 15th wedding
anniversary. Son Charles, heir
to the throne, turned 14, and
Princess Anne; at 12, visited
the Continent to brush up on
her French.
Hemlinoi Sam
The French style leaders
pretty much left hemlines
alone they remained at the
kneecap. But designers in the
United States and abroad
wrapped women into a looser-
fitting, natural silhouette.

New Year Is Celebrated;
Polar Bear Party Today
New Year's eve and day are of the Speare home is done in
traditionally a time for gath
ering together with friends.
Throughout the city last night
and today numerous parties
are marking the end of 1962
and the advent of the new
year. These include suppers,
dinners, ' cocktail and open
house, part leaf gatherings
where music provided enter
tainment and card parties.
But none of this describes
the party which Mr. and Mrs.
B. D. Mitchell give almost
every year at their home, 33
Black Oak drive. The Mit
chells invited about 100
friends and neighbors, today
for their annual Polar Bear
party-the guests are privileg
ed to take a dip in the couple's
heated swimming pool. The
Mitchells thought it might be
fun to have on hand several
cakes of ice to throw into the
pool to give a "polar bear"
atmosphere. However, with a
thick fog and sub-freezing
temperatures in the valley,
this might be unnecessary.
In addition to swimming,
the Mitchells offered their
guests fizzes and brunch.
Another large holiday party
was that given by Mr. and
Mrs. John M. Lynch at their
home on Woodlawn drive last
Saturday evening. About 100
friends were invited for cock
tails. Mr. Lynch always takes
charge of decorating the cou
ple's home for the holidays
and this year the Christmas
tree which he achieved was
considered unusually beauti
ful by the guests. Mr. Lynch
covered the tree with white
flocking, and then trimmed
it with more than 150 blue
Christmas balls of varying
sizes, and golden lights.
Sunday evening Mr. and
Mrs. Jack Speare gave a small
supper party at their home on
Whitman avenue for a group
of friends. The living room
wniie ana green, and a man
telpiece arrangement of ever
greens and large white can
dles of varying sizes placed at
one end, was in the holiday
mood.
Guests included Miss Jan
ice Davis who Is returning to
California today after spend
ing the holidays with her par.
ents, Mr. and Mrs. Noel Da
vis, 535 Oakdale drive. Miss
Davis is a teacher.
Other holiday parties in
cluded one given December
26 by Mr. and Mrs. Dunbar
Carpenter at their home on
Foothills road.
