MEDFORD MAIL TRIBUNE. MEDFOHD, OREGON
11-31 t. i.e. i l " Jr5'S - I
"First, toll me, do you plan
next year?"
ie Family Council
Mrs. I. B.-Slie won t give
nie a chance.
Tina B.-No one can ever
take my mother's place.
Mrs. I. B. I married a wid
ower with a 15-y e a r-old
daughter. Since I've raised my
own daughter to college age,
you'd think Tina had some
confidence in ne. But in the
half-year we've been living to
gether, she never turns to me
for advice. Whon it comes to
what to wear to a party, for
nviimnlo she'll call ud her
aunts or ask the neighbors,
never me.
I want Tina to love me.
fiho'll nrnhnhlv 'never call me
Mother, but I wish she'd stop
referring to me as my la
ther's wife." Since I love her
father, I try to love Tina, too
But she keeps me at a dist
ance and makes things hard
Tina B.-I had one mother
and only one. She died when
I was 10. I got along fine
without my father's new wife.
He and my aunts were all I
needed. I don't need this Mrs.
13. We'll get along best if she
just takes care of my dad and
doesn't Insist on being my
mother
If she feels like mothering
someone, there's her own
daughter. Although she's 10
and away at college, she
comes to the house about
once a month. She's the one
who should call Mrs. B.
Mother, not I.
As far as I'm concerned,
Mrs. B. is still a stranger.
She's an eager beaver to take
over the house and family,
but she'd better give up on me.
The Council: The trouble
Willi Tina is that she's read
too many fairy tales. Mr.
Grimm and the others needed
villains to create conflict, and
when they ran out of ogres
they called in wicked step
mothers. Those two last words
are inseparable in many child
hood stories. How unfair to
conscientious stepmothers
who are suffused with love,
warmth, and the best Inten
tion. For Tina we must urge an
open mind and a trusting
heart. No one can have too
many friends. Why shut out
a kindly lady just because she
lias east her lot as "best
friend" to Tina's father, and
in natural consequence, to his
daughter, too?
Mis. B.'s mistake may be
over-eagerness. Is she trying
to do too much too soon? Is
she aiming to get "there"
overnight?
It will certainly take longer
Hum a half-year for Mrs. H. to
create a place for herself in
Tina's life which has gone
along fur IS years without
lu-r and quite nicely, thank
you, Tina would add! The
trick is for tile older woman
to meet the mixed-up miss
where j-lie is now, accept her.
deride on a few non-persoiuil
approaches. In other words, if
Mrs. H. can hold to the con
cept of being a fellow-guest,
along with Tinii, In Mr. H.'s
home for the first year at
least, she'll be more likely to
win Tina's cooperation and.
in time, collaboration towards
a united household.
As for mothering, that's
merely "best-friending",
carried to the highest degree.
And it certainly lakes two,

intentions may be easily over
looked by a rejecting, resent
ful Tina The latter may see
only interference, nagging
and persecution. But here's
where Mister U. can turn the
tide. He's the "back-up pilot
He must harp on the theme
that we're both on your side
always, daughter dear.
