ton written at the age of 20
to the father of a girl he
sought to court has been giv
en to the University of Vir
ginia. The letter, valued at $5,000,
was presented to the univer
sity's library collection of his
torical documents by Clem D.
Johnson of Roanoke.
Washington wrote the letter
In 1752 to the father of Betsy
Fauntleroy, 16, of Richmond
county, announcing his inten
tions to court the girl as soon
as he recovered from an at
tack of pleurisy.
Young Washington, who had
been rejected once by the girl,
said in the letter:
"Sir: I snould have been
down long before this, but my
business in Frederick detained
me longer than 1 expected,
and immediately on my re
turn from thence, I was taken
with a violent pleurise (cq),
which has reduced me very
low; but purpose (cq), as soon
as I recover my strength, to
wait on Miss Betsy, in hopes
of a revocation of the former

Will Be 'Saved'
Approximately 75 persons
in Jackson county will be sav
ed from cancer in 1963, ac
cording to estimates released
by the American Cancer soci
ety. Dr. Robert Turner, Ashland,
chairman of the Jackson coun
ty unit of the society, stated
that these will be among the
177,000 Americans who will
be saved from the disease dur
ing the coming year. This es
timate is based on the cur
rent cure rate of one in every
three cases.
Statisticians predict, how
ever, that about 224 new cases
of cancer will be diagnosed
for the first time in the coun
ty. Of these, about 119 per
sons will die. . .
To ward off the threat of
cancer, Dr. Turner said, resi
dents should learn the danger
signals of cancer, and be sure
to have a complete yearly
physical examination.
The cure rate of one in
three is a definite indication
of progress in conquest of the
disease, he added. Twenty
five years ago the rate was
only one in seven.
