Get TV Translator
On Elder Mountain
Illinois Valley Word has
been received from KBES-TV,
channel 5, thai to better serve
the Holland Loop and Cave
Junction areas and subject to
the approval of the Federal
Communications Commission,
the station will install and
operate a UHF translator here
at its own expense.
The trans lator will be
placed on Elder mountain.
This location is in accordance
with findings set forth in a
letter lo IV-TV Inc. of Illinois
Valley. The station will main
lain the present UHF trans
lator on Eight Dollar moun
tain.
It is understood that KBES
TV has filed its application
lor approval by the FCC and
should have authority to start
Installation soon. During July
engineers from channel 5 test
ed various sites throughout
the Illinois Valley Id estab
lish the best signal.
Elder mountain at that time
was found to have the best
signal strength to provide
good translator service to
channels 5 and 10. KBES-TV
officials feci the UHF unit
will bring TV to those now
without and improve recep
tion where it is now poor.

said, "It is heartening to have

the interest they are here and
the efforts by KBES-TV to
bring better reception to the

the ladies of the W.S.C.S. of
the Montague Methodist
church. About 115 persons
were present for the festive
evening.

Lyon-Wood, of Scenic dr.,
Mount Shasta, has an auto
mobile thai is unusual on
many counts. It was bought
in 1931, has been in continual
use since, has had but two
owners, and two sets of brake
linings, the original, and one
replacement.
It is now running on its
third set of tires, and while it
may nave Been driven oy
some service station attend
ant or garage mechanic a few
ftct, ii has never been driven
the highways by anyone
but the two owners. These
were: the original purchaser,
Merrill Lyon-Wood, and the
present owner, Miss Lyon-Wood.
This old car runs like a
well broken-in modern car. ;
Its compression is good, gaso-'
line mileage just under 20
MPG, which for any 8-cylin-
der car is good. Total miles

Judges in the contest said
there were 40 entries in the
competition and picking the
first place winner was diffi
cult. There were many artis
tic and unique displays en
tered in the three mile radius.
The contest is an annual
affair conducted in joint co
operation with the Central
Point Junior Chamber of
Commerce and Pacific Power
and Light company.

wedding anniversary, which
was celebrated on Christmas
day. All friends of the family

The community Christmas tree and pronram at Table
Rock was attended by some HO people, includim some
visitors from other places. An excellent program of
readings, music and songs was followed by a visil from
Sanla Clans, who was Hie vital point of interest, espe
cially with the young fry, for the rest of the evening.
Richard Morris had made arrangements for Santas
visit, and must have informed him as lo names and past
behavior. Santa must have considered the children's
behavior pretty fair as each youngster, besides getting lo
sit on his lap, received a present. The Christmas spirit
seemed to prevail in the community with many homes
being highly decorated with colored lights, evergreens,
etc. Tlie most elaborate that we noticed was the Ernest
Sniilh home, where Ernest, Lois and Melissa arc taking
care of Santa's reindeer during the Christmas holidays.
The Donald Richardson family of Portland, who were
holiday visitors here with relatives and friends, left
Wednesday for Portland. Don seemed lo gt a kick out
of our story in last week's Tablets about Gen. Shatter
rolling out of the buggy when it turned over. We were
afraid he might think we didn't show enough respect
for the general. In army lite, one rates according to
his rank, and Donald came out of World War 11 as a
captain.
The clean-up operations following Ilic Christmas
celebrations, are about completed here. At this writing
the skeleton of the turkey looks as if it had been through
the propellers of an aeroplane.
It'i Resolution! Time
As we will soon be slarling a new year, the usual
New Year's resolutions will be in order. Bill Stamps,
the disc Jockey, tells us he has a cigarette problem which
he can't shake off. We asked him if he was going to
make a New Year's resolution to quit smoking. He said
he didn't know, he had been making them for about 50
years bill still had the habit; which goes to show what
some of our teenagers are getting into when they be
gin playing with tire on the end of a cigarette.
We were silting on the running board of a car with
a young lady some time ago, when cars had running
boards. We .started to light a cigarette, when our com
panion asked us to give her one. and when we refused,
she said, "'Don't you think a woman has as much right
to smoke as a man"" We told her we did, but had be
lieved they had too much sense lo do such silly things.
At any rate, we were not going to be the one to start
her on a habit that would likely cling lo her for the
rest of her hie.
The Horsa And I
We have received a get well card from the Pierces
showing an old horse with a feed bag on. and these
words; ''Everybody gets sick; sometimes a hoise won't
eat Ins oats." The horse and 1 look likV two of a kind,
except we have so far been able to eat our oals each
day.
Al Horello, who has been a patient for sometime
in Rogue Valley hospital, is at present spending the
holidays at Ins home here.
