Montgomery started out from
Lima on August of 1961. He
got through the Panama Canal
aboard a Peruvian Navy ship,
and from then on he walked
through the banana republics,
through Mexico, across the
United Stales to New York
and then back across the na

West Germany

of millions of people."
Khrushchev made his
charge in a letter to West Her
man Chancellor Konrad Ade
nauer. It was In reply to a
communication of protest
from Adenauer following the
shooting last Aug. 17 of Peter
Fcchter, IB, an East German
outh who hied to death along
the Berlin Wall in a futile at
tempt to escape to the west.
Adenauer had urged
Khrushchev to help stop such
incidents.
Adenauer Blasted
In his reply, broadcast hy
Moscow Radio, Khrushchev
blasted Adenauer for alleged
ly following war policy, called
again for a German peace
treaty, and renewed charges
that the West was guilty of
espionage and subversion
against East Germany.
In Washington, a Stale De
partment spokesman said
Wednesday that Moscow's
current spy scare "hardly

viet press, radio and tele
vision have heen filled with
accusations of espionage by

viet government endorsed the
spy charges against the Amer
icans Wednesday, and the em
bassy and Stale Department
promptly denied them.
Speaking of the Cuhan
crisis, Khrushchev told Ade
nauer: 'Tried To Cat! Shadow'
"You tried to corner us so
thai there would be no way
out but conflict. The Carib
bean caused only annoyance
for you which you expressed
ill a recent statement."
He added that Adenauer
had "tried to rast a shadow"
between the United Slates and
the Soviet Union and had
tried to hamper a fruitful ex
change of opinions.
Khrushchev pointed o u t

your initiative." Khrushchev
said, "the Federal German
