In such cases I usual ly find that the symptoms are vague and more like those of nerv ousness than anything else. I know of no symptoms that are characteristic of adhe sions, unless, as In vi., rare cases, they are producing brief attacks of intcstlonal ob struction. Years ago, able x-ray men gave up trying to dinminsc adhesions. , When I hear that a surgeon is operating "for adhesions", my mind goes back to the yo;irs around 1915 when "ad hesions" was the fa.hionable dingnosis. and thousands of people were being operated on for It. Later, the fashion ehiiiiKL'd, and people were op erated on for "chronic ap pendicitis"; or their '.-nsils or teeth were removed. Now the fiirfiionnblc diagnosis is chronic diverticulitis! Sometimes, in the old days, when the surgeon operated for adhesions he found some, and oftentimes he didn't. After a while the surgeons lost their enthusiasm about adhesions when thry came to spc that It is doubtful if adhe sions produce symptoms, and when they learned that after they pulled apart adhesions, the.se commonly reformed. Certainly no matter whether or not they found adhesions the patient was usually no bet ter for the operation. Most surgeons then quit perform ing this type of operation. Stuck Together In my 25 years at the Mayo Clinic. I never saw a patient operated on "for adhesions." 1 can remember well two men who appeared to die of a heart nll.ick At autopsy the pathol ogist called my attention to the fiict that their intestines were all stuck together to form a remarkable mass of adhesions. When we asked the wives of the men If they had ever had abdominal pain. Indigestion or constipation, they said, "No." D.ntirtry In Rutiia Today, I think most able surcenns when they want to look into an abdomen with the hope of finding something wrong, speak of It as an "ex ploratory operation"; that Is what 1 would do. In some few rases it Is better to explore the abdomen than to lit the patient go on suffering. Recently, eight American dentists spiiit almost a month In Russia visiting clinics and talking with the leaders of Russian dentistry. The mis sion was received cordially everywhere and In many In stances, the personal and offi cial hospitality was over whelming. However, the group of our dentists feel they must say that they found that dental care In Russia is at least 30 years behind our professional standards here In the United States. This isn't the f'uilt of the Russian dentists; it Is largely the fault of poor equipment, poor supplies, poor Instruments and poor materials for fillings. Not all of the "dental units" even had running water. There is very little gold avail able for fillings. Stainless steels is used for crowns and bridges. Even silver amalgam fillings arc rare, and hence a type of cement has to be used. Also, what is sad Is that local anetltesia for dentistry is virtually unknown. Another .ad feature Is that the dentists are so poorly treated by the government. The average salary for a den tist who has had from 10 to 25 years of prartice is about $142 a month. This is much less than the $2:15 which is given to skilled workers in industry. As the result this neglect, few men go into den tistry, and hence some 73 per cent of the practitioners are women. Rheumatoid Arthritis Yew people realize that the rheumatoid type of arthritis which Is so severe and so crippling In adult lire can also attack children - usually between the ages of 2 and 5 years. The early symptoms Include high fever each day, a skin rash, pains in the Joints, some involvement of the heart, per haps some Inflammation of the lungs, often severe ab dominal pain, and eventually, some arthritis. Usually die child becomes anemic; the red blood sedimentation rale Is very high, and this should immediately warn the physi cian that he is dealing with a very serious condition. Un less this test is made it may be some time before the dis ease is recognizable. Unfortu nately, the cause i not known, and hence treatment is very unsatisfaetory. Along with the American young people were delegates from 45 foreign countries. Youth for Christ Interna tional is an interdenomina tional organization of Evan gelical Protestants. Evangelist Billy Graham, one of the founders and still a chief sponsor of the organi zation, will be the principal speaker at the closing session of the convention Saturday afternoon. They are those who select ed their wine with some thought as to what they really wanted, and who had the add ed advantage of consultation with a wine merchant who could give them help in their choice, he said. A great many of our custom ers, for example, are in the 25 to 40 year group." Padnos discussed the job of a wine merchant on a recent visit to New York. He said it was far more than merely doling out bottles for cash over a counter. "For example, two custom ers may come in and ask for 'a sweet wine'," he explained. "It is up to the merchant to find out what 'A' means when he asks for a sweet wine and what 'B' means when he asks for the same thing. The pro fessional wine merchant has to act almost like a doctor in finding out these things." Tasting Committee Padnos said that in his own establishment, he has a tast ing committee consisting of himself, his son, an assistant, the store manager and one or two others. "We keep a record on the taste preferences of our regu lar customers." he continued. "We don't keep It on every one who just drops in oc casionally for a bottle of wine, but on those who have made a practice of careful and se lective wine buying." As to the popularity of wine, Padnos noted that he had seen figures showing wine consumption in the United States in 1961 was 172 million gallons, more by 50 million gallons than was consumed in 1951. "The best way to tell what wine you like is, of course, to taste it," said Padnos. "No matter how much help you get, you have to be the final judge.
