was Just three years ago that
: lanky, thin-faced youngster
f named Richard Jay Wilmoth
- began hanging around the
' ticket counters at Baltimore's
friendship airport.
He was 14 at the lime. He
: came to the airport every
week end, usually early Sat
urday morning, unobtrusively
; observing the handling of
; tickets, baggage, passengers
'and airplanes.
He haunted virtually ail air
' lines but one in particular In
trigued him - comparatively
small Lake Central, a local
(service carrier. Being small,
! it also was informal and he
; began talking to LCA agents.
One day he was on the ramp
watching his new friends load
; a DC3 and. without saying a
Vword, he helped put on the
baggage.

plane to the airport and show

ployes. A stewardess about to
board a flight took one look
at the gleaming little model
and flipped.
"I'd pay you to make me
one like that," she enthused.
A bell sounded in the brain
of young Mr. Wilmoth. He
bought several more DC3
models at $1 each and wound
up with customers for all of
them at $3 each. An Alle
gheny ramp agent saw one
and asked Richard If he could
build an Allegheny Convair.
The youngster located some
Convair kits and by now he
was really in business. He

Id requests from employees of
other airlines for models of
their own planes.

"He's like one of the fam
ily," said LCA station man
ager Forest Burres. "He's out
here every Saturday working,
taking pictures of planes and
delivering his models. I never
saw a kid so nuts about avia
tion." Richard's own ambitions
are modes!. He has no desire
to be a glamorous pilot or
even an airline vice president.
"I'd Just like to go to work
for an airline when I get
through high school," he said.
"My father works for a rail
road but I guess he wouldn't
mind."
