the National Congress of Par
enst and Teachers stands at
more than 12 million. More
than 3.5 million of the mem
bers are male and 760,000
are teachers.
The members belong to
more than 47,000 local PTA
units. The Organization was
founded in 1897 in Washing
ton, DC, as the National
Congress of Mothers. But as
men and teachers joined in
increasing numbers the name
was changed in 1925.
Sir Wolstan Dixie Wants
Recognition for Use of
Family Name by South

nounced today he has no ob
jection to the use of his fam
ily name by the South of the
United States.
"All I want," said the jov
ial baronet, "is recognition of
our contribution to American
life. Dammit, sir, not every-

body puts his name to so large
and marvelous a part of the
world.
Sir Wolstan was moved to
speak because he expected to
go to the United States in
1965-the centennial of the
end of the Civil War. He
wants to retrace footsteps of
his jolly forebear John Dixie
who, he alleges, was such a
good man to work for that
slaves used to sing:
"I wish I were on Dixie's
land."
That." said Sir Wolstan,
eyes twinkling, "is the real
origin of the words 'Dixie'
and 'Dixieland.' I'm not ask
ing for our plantations back,
mind you, though believe me
we could use them these days
of high taxation.
"I just think it would be
nice if children were to learn
in Southern schools the truth
ful meanings of the words."
Sir Wolstan is proud of his
family. He can trace his ante
cedents back to the year 1100
when they were already large
landowners. He now lives on
part of the same land Mar
ket Bosworth in Leicester
shire where King Richard lost
his crown at the battle of
Bosworth field in 1485.
"My ancestor, John," he
said, "was a schoolmate of
John Harvard and Thomas
Mookcr, who founded Hart
ford, Conn., at the Dixie Foun
dation of Ecclcstiastical His
tory at Cambridge. He landed
in New York with the Dutch
in 1K3 and tried to Crow to-
I bacco in what is now Harlem.
"That didn t work out so he
look his people to Carolina
and Georgia. He and his fam
ily had marvelous names as
employers and that was why
everybody talked about
Dixie's land."

Two Men Wanted in
County Are Arrested
Two men wanted on bad
check charges by Jackson
county sheriff's office have
been arrested in Eureka,
Calif.
The' pair, Roy Ward Jr., 35,
and Lester Howard Fields, 32,
have waived extradition and
will be returned to Medford
to face the charges.
Sheriff's warrants charge
Ward with obtaining property
under false pretenses and
Fields With uttering and pub
lishing a false check. Rail
was set at SI. 500 each.
Medford police said they
wish to question the pair in
connection with four bad
check cases in Medford.
