Mrs. Larson stated that the
October 12 storm did a great
deal of damage to the capitol
grounds, and that Governor
Mark Hatfield welcomed her
plan as there are no state
funds budgeted for storm
damage. Mrs. Larson, a resi
dent of Springfield, is anxious
to have work begin on the
project as soon as possible,
and has asked the American
Legion , auxiliary units
throughout the state to co
operate by contributions of
money so that trees and
shrubs can be ordered. She
is calling her drive "Capital
Funds for the Capitol
Grounds. '

interested in aiding in this
project are welcome to con

Christmas Party
Favorites In song and story

gram for the annual Christ
mas party of Chapter BE of
the PEO sisterhood, accord
ing to Mrs. Richard Camden
and Mrs. Robert Wilcox, who
have arranged the evening's
entertainment. The meeting
will be held at the home of
Mrs. Gary Boshears, 331S
Hollywood avenue, tonight at
7:30 o'clock.

month. She used pyracantha
berries and cypress.
Mr. and Mrs. Henry Friesen
discussed with ', the group
"Scedings of Birds," and ex
plained the- shapes of the dif
ferent bird bills, saying these
indicate the type of foods and
insects each individual bird
is able to catch and eat. They
also reported on .birds which
are invaluable to the garden:

search on the biological terms
and names of plants, reported
on the naming of- numerous
plants and evergreens:' He
stated the origin of a plant
in question, as well as the lo
cale, may supply the grow
er with identification of the
plant. For instance the Doug
las fir is easily associated with
the state of Oregon, since the
botanist who named the tree
was an Oregon la ri, and . the
tree Is native as well. Many
names are derived from the
word "Occident," meaning
western, he said. The , "blue
bonnet," implies the state of
Texas.
, Mrs. , Arthus Straus was
hostess for the dinner, and
following the business -members
conducted a gift ex
change. Mrs.. Cliff Green was
winner of the- door prize.
Plans were made for the
spring flower show.

women will decorate a Christ
mas tree and the hall.
The post and auxiliary will
hold the annual Christmas
party and gift exchange Fri
day, December 21, at 8 p.m.
at the hall. Gifts are to be
marked for men, women or

Oregon college, Ashland, and
an accomplished equestrienne
who helps with the ranch

Mrs. Hessig, as well as be
ing a full time partner with
her husband' on their ranch
near Montague, is active in
many social, and civic affairs.
She is a member of the Siski
you County Fair board, and
was for several years presi
dent of the Shasta - Valley
Improvement club.
Mrs. - Foulke,-' who succeeds
Mrs. Russell" Peavy, San
Diego, is also, a full- partner
in the ranch business with her
husband, helping 1 all phases
of the work. Both she and her
husband are natives of Siski
you county. She -is'' the former
Esther-Mary-Brown of Scott
Valley.; They were married
in 1932, have "-ne son, Tim,
and a granddaughter. .
They purchased a portion
of the Edson-Foulke holdings
In 1942 and -the ranch home in
1948.
Mr. Foulke has, been active
n the Cattlemen's association,
both on. a .county . and state
level and, has held Important
committee chairmanships.

al Women's club to be held
at the Girls Community club
Thursday, December 20 at
7:30 p.m. '
Mrs. Lola Brennan will ex
plain , the activities of the
School of Hope to which the
club's Christmas contribution
will be given. Mrs. Brennan
is a member of Jackson Coun
ty Retarded Children's asso
ciation, - and .the National
group.
Miss Edie Reinking will
present a ballet number on
a Christmas theme. Miss Rein-
king is a student of Colleen
Hope, and has also studied,
ballet In Portland and Mon
terey, Calif. ' ..
The remainder of the pro-'
gram will consist of games
and carol singing.' Refresh
ments will be served by the
hospitality committee,, headed
by . Mrs. Marguerite Hartman.

cently at a bridal shower at
the home pf Mrs. Sharon S.

Cohostess was Mrs. Paul Lar
sen. Miss Kubalek is the bride
elect of Ens. Robert Sttckley
Schmidt, son of Mr. and Mrs.
Clarence R, Schmidt,' Janney
lane. Their wedding will be
an event of December 26 at
Sacred Heart Catholic church.
For the shower, attended
by 18 friends, .the hostesses
had used Miss Kubalek's wed
ding colors, white, green, sil
ver and touches of red.
A manzanita branch, spray
ed silver, served as- a kitchen
hint and recipe tree. The serv
ing table was centered with
an arrangement of white
chrysanthemums with crystal
and silver containers.

Grants Pass, presided ' over
the short business meeting at
which it was decided that the
gifts would be given to shut
in members and patients in
the nursing homes.
Miss Marie Prescott, Ash
land, spoke of joys and hap
piness of Christmas, us'ing
Biblical references, personal
meanings,, and poetical inter
pretations,, during which she
asked the members to sing
carols which also expressed
happiness. Highlighting .her
presentation . were passages
from Peter Marshall's Christ
mas book and Pat Boone's
new edition on the meaning
of Christmas.
, Mrs.- Oscar-Bjorlie gave a
talk on the legend of depora
tion and Christmas customs
in Poland, Argentina, Italy,
and Lithuania. She displayed
four artistic model... of decorated-trees
which she had
made in miniature to depict
the unique features of each
Country's customs.
i Carols were sung by the
group with Miss Florence Al
len leading and- Mrs. Melvin
E. ,Ottls accompanying. The
singing was conducted by the
grasping of hands in friend
ship and to wish each a merry
Christmas.-
The members then wrapped
the individual gifts under the
supervision of Mrs. Elsie
Turner, program chairman. V
The next meeting will be
held at the Girls Community,
club January 19. A panel
on "New. Frontiers for Wom
en," will be moderated by
Mrs. Waiter Foote.. -
