Tornado Takes On
Willamette Quintet
A pair of high school hoop
aggregations which opened
the season on a victory note
and which are ambitious to
keep to their winning ways
collide this evening at the
Hedrick Junior high gymna
sium here.
Medford's Black Tornado is
host to the Willamette Wolver
ines. It will be the first o a
two game series. The clubs
collide again on Saturday eve
ning. Tipoff time on both oc
casions is 8:15 p.m.
Medford enters the fracas
after downing Marshfield and
North Bend last week end.
Willamette trimmed St. Fran
cis Tuesday in the only game
it has played.
Tornado Mentor Frank Roe
Iandt has indicated that he'll
have a starting lineup of Jack
Forde, Jim Hill, Rich Benner,
Mike Neathamer and Dan
Miles.
Mat Last Year
For the Wolverines Coach
Chuck DeAutremont is ex
pected to call upon Dave Skel
ton, Earl Backman, Jack Low
ery, Terry Stahel and Dave
Syverson.
This will be non-league ac
tion. Willamette Is located at
Eugene and the Wolverines
contend in District 5.
Tonight's engagement will
not be the first meeting be
tween the two schools. They
met here last December. Med
ford needed a big fourth quar
ter effort to pull away from
the Wolverines.
The Tornado will have the
height edge. Willamette's only
starter above the 6-foot mark
is 6-4 Backman. The Tornado
has Forde at 6-4M, Hill at
6-2 Vi and Benner at 6-1.
Took Look
Medford takes on Willam
ette without first hand infor
mation on the visitors. Coach
DeAutremont, with his team
idle, took a look see at Med
ford last week end.
While the Tornado has two
games behind it, the Wolver
ines have the advantage of
more extensive practice. Med
ford went against its opening
week end foes with only four
days of practice for a big
share of the squad. Reports
are that in the early week, the
Tornado hit sort of a lull in
the wake of initial efforts. But
it was anticipated that the
Medford's would catch stride
for the Willamette series.
Eagle Point and-Medford
junior varsities vie in the
6:30 o'clock preliminary to
night. Medford and Ashland
sophomores meet in the Sat
urday curtain lifter.

OSU Will
Not Enter
Track Tiff
Corvallis-lTD-Oregon State
track and field coach Sam
Bell said today he would not
enter his athletes in the Ore
gon Invitational Indoor Track
meet in Portland next month
because the Corvallis school
has not been allowed to share
in lis promotion.
The meet, which started
two years ago, is sponsored by
the University of Oregon's
Portland Alumni association.
"I regret this move," Bell
said, "But I don't think that it
would be in the best interests
of Oregon State for us to
continue in the meet on the
current basis."
Bell asked that Oregon
State be allowed to purchase
half interest in the track and
also share responsibility and
any revenue from the meet.
Fifteen members of the Ore
gon alumni group in Portland
pledged $1,000 each two years
ago to underwrite the meet.
Turned Down
The meet board of directors
turned down Bell's proposal
on grounds that the meet is
not a school function, but that
of a group whose privilege it
is to donate profits to the
University of Oregon Devel
opment fund for scholarship
purposes. Alumni said only a
minor portion of the fund is
marked for athletic scholar
ships. Bell cited the Far West
Basketball classic whre Ore
gon State invited Oregon to
join as a full partner. Refer
ring to the track meet, he
said, "It's a selfish thing. The
purpose is to promote track
at Oregon. It would have to
be a cooperative venture be
fore I take our boys to the
meet."
Al Bullicr Jr., president of
the Portland alumni group,
said the track meet and the
basketball classic were "en
tirely different operations."
He said both schools were In
volved in the basketball meet,
but neither school was in
volved in the track meet.
"It's strictly a business ven-
ture on our part," he said.

That's a lot of hoping, con

"We have the best match In

"With a break in the weath
