Famous Christmas Trees
Subject of Club Party
Wednesday Study club ob
served the holiday season at
the December S meeting with
a dessert luncheon and Christ
mas party,
Mrs. R. T. Nichol gave the
program and as a departure
from the traditional Christ
mas story, chose for her sub
ject, Christmas customs and
famous Christmas trees. Mrs.
Nichol stated that the world's
largest and most unusual
Christmas tree is in Hilton
Park, Washington, DC, a 300-year-old
water oak. The tree,
only 50 feet tall, has a dia
metric spread of 110 feet.
During the depression the city
firemen decorated the tree
with colored lights and Span
ish moss and Christmas eve,
1929, as a switch was thrown,
the world's largest living tree
burst into bloom.
Continuing, Mrs. Nichol de
scribed the National Christ
mas tree, located in Kings
canyon, 64 miles east of Fres
no, Calif. On December 25,
1925, the famous General
Grant tree. Sequoia gigan
tean, or big tree, was desig
nated as the nations Christ
mas tree. It was a small tree
3,500 years ago, before the
birth of Christ, and was dis
covered by Joseph Thomas in
1867. To protect the tree, the
area was made into a park
and In 1940 the tree was of
ficially dedicated as National
Living Christmas tree. It
stands 267 feet high, 40 feet
in diameter at base, circum
ference is 107 feet at first
limb which Is 130 feet from
the ground.
Another tree mentioned is
the famous "Tree of Lights,"
sponsored by the Salvation
Army and Radio Station
KMOX in St. Louis, Mo.,
where Christmas carols and
services are broadcast. Also
of interest Is the giant spruce
in Rockefeller plaza in Radio
City in New York. At Christ
mas it Is strung with 6,000
twirling icicles 18 inches long
and 6500 colored bulbs, re
quiring six miles of wiring.
Gift Certificate!
There is also the "Travelers
Christmas Tree," located in
Jackson, Md., on the main
line of the B & O Railway
company. The tree Is 55 feet
tall with a spread of 55 feet
and each year is decorated.
The trainmen have orders to
decrease speed as they ap
proach the area so the pas
sengers may view the tree.
Two oriental holly trees are
planted nearby for pollination
and the red holly berries at
test to a rare and unique
Christmas tree.
A group at one of the tea
tables was the four senior
members of Wednesday Study
