Guide fo Dispose
Atomic Wastes on
Coast Developed
; Corvallis - A guide to safe
disposal of atomic wastes in
the Pacific Ocean has been
developed by a group of West
Coast scientists, including Dr.
Wayne V. Burt, head of ocean
ography at Oregon State uni
versity. The committee was given
the assignment of drafting
recommendations for ocean
disposal of low-level radioac
tive wastes as a safeguard
against future hazards to hu
mans and damage to seafood
and other marine organisms.
Increased use of radioiso
topes in hospitals, laboratories
and research centers has
brought increased concern of
how to best dispose of the
radioactive wastes without up
setting or endangering sea
life, Burt explained.
Dropped in Deep Water
In 1056, for example, about
2,000 drums of radioactive
wastes were dropped into spe
cified deep water disposal
areas off San Francisco. In
1960, more than 30,000 were
released there.
Almost no radioactive
wastes have been dumped Into
the ocean off Oregon up to
now. Burt pointed nutj If
recommendations for disposal
are followed, no danger li
seen in the future, he empha
sized.
The nine - man committee
recommends that 20 disposal
areas be the limit for the
Coast from the Mexican bor
der to the Columbia river
with a similar number north
of the Columbia river. For
now, six southern and two
northern sites are probably
adequate, the report notes
Nolei Recommendations
The committee also laid
down recommendations on
quantities of wastes that
should be allowed dumped at
one time or in one location
recommends a system of po
licing and monitoring of dis
posal, and continued research
to gain additional information
about waste disposal, includ
ing methods of packaging to
permit controlled release of
the radioactive waste over a
period of a few years.
The special committee of
Oregon, Washington, Califor
nia and Canada scientists was
formed In 195B by the Na
tional Academy of Science-
National Research Council at
the request of the United
States Atomic Energy Com
mission. One of its assign
ments was to carefully exam
ine the capacity of the ocean
to receive the radioactive
wbsIps.

Subject of Article
A king-sized doll house that
would delight the heart of any
little girl awaits Oregonians

southern Oregon at the Jack

It's not really a doll house.
H is the dolVroom In a store
house of pioneer lore collect
ed from southern Oregon's by
Rone gold-camp days. The sto
ry of the dolls Is told In the
holiday issue of "Pacific Pow

found under Christmas trees
by the younRstrrs of the ear

earlier.
The dolls are not new, the
story relates, but were the
playthings of the pioneer Ore

were favorites of tills during
the frontier days.
The story and pictures In
the publication tell how Miss
Mary lliinley, the museum's
curator, and other women of
(he staff, went about the tusk
of developing the doll room.
"Pacific Powerland" is dis
tributed to more than 4110.000
PP&L customers, Med ford
district manager F. A. Bcnrah
noted, and Is intended to ar
qualnt its readers with the
interesting areas served by
Pacific Power.
