Tht Mysterious Caie ol the
Hidden Beepi end cneepi
Every neighbor in the block
who knew about it, and most
of them did, had an opinion.
Many of them suddenly be
came "experts," claiming to
know all about beeps and
cheeps. In the meantime the
beeps and scratehings con
tinued In a downspout on the
house at the corner. All day
long the noise persisted. It
had been present for a couple
of weeks.
Some of the "experts"
tried to explain the noises
by the presence of a group
of starlings on me roouop,
near the upper end of the
downspout. Where the "ex
perts" fell down, however,
was attempting to explain
why the beeps in the spout
continued after the rooftop
birds were frightened away.
The consensus of all con
cerned was that something
alive was in the downspout.
All the folks did a great deal
of Intent listening, some with
their ears pressed against the
metal of the downspout.
Even long periods of listen
ing however, proved little as
the beeps were always muf
fled. The spout itself acted
as a sounding Doaro, tele
graphing the noise through
out its entire length. The ex'
act location of the noise just
couldn't be pin-pointed.
Dismantling Began
After days of discussion and
listening the homeowner and
the interested neighbors dc-
elded the downspout had to
come down and whatever was
inside had to be removed to
the outside. The work of dis
mantling began. The pound
ing and the nail pulling quiet
ed the noise from within the
metal pipe.
The usuully present star
lings left the rooftop and took
up positions in nearby trees
and on convenient telephone
wires to watch the proceed
ings. In fact, now that some
of the neighbors look back
on the happenings of that
day they recall the fact that

(Register and Tribune

the birds in the trees and on
the wires seemed exceeding
ly interested in what was go
ing on.
At last the downspout was
disconnected at the level of
the eaves. The brackets that
had held it vertical with the
side of the house were loosen
ed and the long length of
pipe laid on the ground. Out
from the pipe end scrambled
a slarling. A man grabbed
the bird and held it firmly
in his hand. He, along with
the others, examined the
length of pipe.
Mais of Material
A couple of feet from what
was the upper end of the
rainspout was a mass of small
sticks, strips of paper and
rags, several long grass roots
and leaves occupying at least
a foot and a half of the pipe.
On the top of this mass of
material the captive starling
had lived for at least a cou
ple of weeks. The man hold
ing the starling examined the
bird. It was an adult and
very plump.
The conclusion seemed ob
vious even to the most skep
tical, who for the first time
in their lives were witnessing
an indication of animal in
telligence. The bird had some
how slipped into the down
spout and could not escape.
The other starlings had ob
viously been feeding the cap
tive, keeping him alive.
Some of the "experts" in
attendance held to another
theory. They claimed the out
side birds had also been car
rying material and dropping
it in the spout in order to
build the platform high
enough for the captive to
crawl out. The skeptical say
this is impossible. Others,
probably equally intelligent,
say a thing may be easily
'i;e but at the same time
unbelievable.
