Willi, scoured the country
side searching for turtles that
gave Indications of haying

found many. Most were try
ing to cross- a road. These
were the ones he wanted for
his experiments.
Sometimes Willie wo u d
help the turtle get to the
other side of the road. He
would then put the animal
down, purposely hfdlng the
reptile in the opposition direc
tion to that which it was
originally headed. The turtle
would turn and resume its
chosen path. Willie would fol
low t a discreet distance.
There were times when the
plodding turtle would travel

Marking carefully in his
mind the exact direction the
turtle was headed, Willie
would pick it up and turn it
i around several times, then
place it again on the ground.
The turtle would flounder for
a few minutes, then head out
on its true course.

be terribly near-sighted Willie
wondered if it saw oDjecis a
few yards away and guided
itself by them, so he devised
a blindfold. Placing a black
cloth mask over a turtle's
eyes. Willie would "swing it
round and round" several
times and place 11 again on
the grounds.
There would be a few mo
ments of hesitation. Seldom
would the turtle attempt to
dig the mask off (he accepted
it as Just "on. of those
things".) It might start off at
an oblique angle for a few
yards but gradually it would
set back on its orlainal course.
The bearing, however It was
handled by its Inner reflexes,
worked whether it could see
or not. The turtle always
headed out toward whatever
destination it had previously
selected.
