will deliver to happy younc
sters and adults this Christ
mas. With more than 29.000,000
bikes already in use by Amer
ica's young and young at
heart, this year's crop of
Christmas bikes will bring the
cycling fraternity's member
ship to an all time high.
To illustrate Santa's deliv

chances are better than 9 out
of 10 that it will be recovered
by the police in a day or two.
The major aid in recover
ing stolen cars, says Edwyn
Silbcrling, special assistant to
Attorney General Robert F.
Kennedy, is the automobile
license plate.
So vital are car tags for all
kinds of crime detection that ,
law enforcement officials
have developed special pro
grams to make citizens li-lence-plate
conscious. The
Federal Bureau of Investiga
tion, in a booklet distributed
to gasoline station operators. .
urges that license plates that
appear to have been tam
pered with be reported im
mediately. Memory Courses
In some areas, such as
Cook County, Illinois, police
officials work through the
public schools to teach chil
dren to become license-plate
conscious. Some police de
partments give their men ;
special speed reading and j
memory courses designed to '
equip them for faster identi-
lication of license numbers.
An extensive study of li
cense plates was made recent
ly by the University of Illi
nois. Out of it came the rec
ommendation that state offi
cials make their tags out f
rough material so the num
bers could not be obscured by
bending or cracking.
Commenting on the Univer
sity's experiments with vari-,
nus materials. Cook County

lett said: "Steel is the natural
material for license plates.
Steel tags are durable, and
n normal paint finish pro
tects them from rusting. Oth
er materials simply can't take
the beating that steel can."
Deer Ate Tags
License plates have been
made out of various male
rials, including leather and
isoy beans. The soy bean
plates had to be withdrawn
when it was found that deer
were eating them.
Annual plates also are pre
ferred by police officials be
cause the yearly switch in
color combinations makes it
easier to spot outdated tags.

Trim fat from medium iiied tlawing chicken which hi
been cut in pieces. Melt fit in large heavy kettle or
Dutch oven. Brown chicken in fat, few pieces at a
time; drain on paper loweli. Fry 6 slices Canadian bacon
lightly in same kettle, remove and set aside, pour off
all fat. Return browned chicken and bacon to kettle, add
one medium chopped onion, 1 tsp. salt, 3 or 4 pepper
corns and 6 cups water. Cover tightly, heat to boiling
then simmer 2 hours until chicken is tender. (If much
fat accumulates, skim it off.) Stir in one package (8-oz.)
elbow macaroni and one tblsp. parsley flakes. Add one
cup water if needed. Cook uncovered, stirring occas
ionally, 15 70 minutes or until macaroni is tender. Taste
and adjust seasonings. Makes six servings.
