the reading as well as in the
making and eating.
The night before Christmas,
It sometimes Is said,
la the eve when the elves
law their schemes.
So that is the night to go
safely to bed
And have colorful augar
plum dreams.
Colorful Sugtrplumi
Exciting thing here is that
you use a variety of flavor
ings such as vanilla, lemon,
peppermint and almond; a
variety of colored sugars such
as white, yellow, green, red
or pink. Colorful sugars are
made simply by blending a
tiny bit of pure food coloring
into granulated sugar.
3','i cups enriched flour
1 teaspoon salt
1 cup shortening (part
butler)
1 package active dry yeast
cup warm water mnt
hoi)
4 cup dairy sour cream
, 2 whole eggs, well beaten
1 cup sugar (see below)
1 tablespoon flavoring
(see below)
Mix flour and salt, cut In
shortening, Dissolve yeast in
water. Stir Into flour mixture
with dairy sour cream, eggs,
flavoring (vanilla, lemon,
peppermint or almond) mix
well. Cover with damp cloth
and chill 2 hours (the dough
does not rise).
Round up one third of the
dough and roll on a sugared
board (white, yellow, green,
red or pink sugar), keeping
rest chilled. Preheat oven to
37S degrees. Roll dough Into
oblong, 10x8 Inches. Fold
two ends to center, overlap
ping slightly. Sprinkle with
sugar, roll again in 10 x 8
inches; repeat. Cut into
wreaths, snails, horseshoes,
canes or other fancy design;
set on ungreased baking
sheet.
Press down ends lo keep
shape. Repeat with rest of
dough in other flavor and
color combinations. Bake im
mediately 10 lo 12 minutes or
until delicately browned. Re
move at once. This makes 10
onzen visions or sugar
plums" cookies.
Fancitr Sugarplumi
To make sugarplum braids,
rut the rolled out dough in
4 x 1 inch strips: hrald Ihree
strips tosrther. Rake as aliove.
To make siigerplum whirls,
rut 8 x 1 4 Inch strips and
wind around clothespins with
ends under pins. Bake as
above.
To make sugarplum rib
bons, cut 4xj Inch strips;
weave on toothpicks into
shape of ribbon candy. Bake
as above.
Cranberry Molds
Beat one pound can Jellied
cranberry sauce until smooth.
Add one-half cup water, or
gingerale, or fruit juice and
mix thoroughly. Spoon into
individual salad molds. Place
in freezer overnight. To re
move molds, dip in hot water
and the frozen ice will slip
out easily. Place on tray. Re
turn to freezer until ready to
serve. Decorate with green
leaf candies.
Choco-Nut Fudga With
Pleasing Variations
for Santa Sacking
As suggested in our picture
today, it's a happy notion to
help Santa by making and
sacking goodies for sharing
with any and all visitors dur
ing the season of good cheer.
The children will vastly en
joy making and "sacking" a
small assortment of these
candies in squares cut from
heavy-duty aluminum foil or
from transparent plastic
wrap. Tie with gay ribbon
bow and sprig of holly if you
like.
1 13 cups evaporated milk
1 cup sugar
. 2 6-ounce packages (1
, cup each) semi-sweet
chocolate morsels or
1 12-ounce jumbo
package semi-sweet
chocolate morsels
Vi cup coarsely chopped
walnuts
Combine evaporated milk
and sugar in a three-quart
saucepan. Place over moder
ate heat and bring to a full
rolling boil, stirring con
stantly. Remove from hcatj
add semi-s w e e t chocolate
morsels and stir until smooth.
Turn into 8x8x2 inch alu
minum foil-lined baking pan.
Sprinkle nuts over surface,
pressing firmly into fudge.
Chili. Cut into li4 inch
squares. Makes two pounds.
Variation!. Omit chopped
walnuts from recipe; press a
walnut half into surface of
each square. Or when semi.
sweet chocolate morsels are
melted and mixture is
smooth, add one-half cup
coarsely chopped walnuts to
fudge before turning into
pan. Omit pressing nuts into
surface.
Magic Mortals
Here are six dozen cookie
morsels achieved with almost
magic neatness and dispatch.
You 11 want a few dozen for
home eating and more for
Santa sacking.
Combine two eggs and one-
half cup sugar and beat until
thick and lemon colored. Sift
in one-half cup sifted flour
and one-fourth teaspoon salt.
Stir in one six-ounce package
(one cup) semi-sweet choco
late morsels, three-fourths
cup finely cut date's, three-
fourths cup chopped walnuU
and one tablespoon grated
lemon rind.
Drop by rounded teaspoons,
two inches apart, on a well-
greased baking sheet. Bake
in a slow oven, 323 degrees,
12 lo 13 minutes. Remove
immediately from baking
sheet.

plesceds.
So gather 'round and let
us look
Into the Cooky Storybook
Storybook dough is made
like this:
4 cup soft butter
i rup augur
Food coloring (see
recipes)
' teaspoon almond flav
oring l' cups enriched flour
Cream butter, sugar, food
coloring (see recipes) and fla
voring. Stir in flour; mix
well. If dough is loo dry to
handle, work in one lo two
teaspoons butter. Shape as di
rected. Place on ungreased
baking sheet; chill 30 min
utes. Preheat oven to 3(10 de
grees (slow). Bake about 30
minutes. (Time will vary with
size). Do nol brown. Makes
2 lo 2'j dozen cookies.
Clndtralla's Slipptr. Make
Storybook Dough; do not add
food coloring. Form l'j tea
spoon dough into oval with
depression keeping shape of
slipper in mind. Make one
end slightly pointed for toe
and press hole part way down
into toe. Bake as suggested
above. Add small slipper
pom-pom or colored Icing or
red hot cinnamon candies.
Patar Babbits. Make Story
book Dough; do not add food
coloring. Roll one level tea
spoon dough into ball for
head and one heaping tea
spoon for body. Use tiny ball
for tail and bits of dough for
cars. Bake; while warm,
sprinkle with confectioners'
sugar.
Pattr Rabbit's Carrots. To
Storybook Dough, add three
drops red and two drops yel
low or green food coloring.
Roll dough into two inch
rolls; taper at ends. Use bits
of green colored toothpicks
for stem. '
