Kennedy To View Hole Blown in Nevada Desert

dent Kennedy will get a
chance Saturday to inspect
results of this country's first
nuclear earth-moving project,
the White House has dis
closed. From a low-flying helicop
ter the President will view a
1,200-foot-wide hole blown in
the Nevada dessert last July
as part of Project Plowshare
an attempt to develop
peaceful uses for atomic en
ergy. The so called "Sedan cra
ter,'' several hundred feet
deep has been added to the
President's itinerary for a
week end western swing de
signed mainly to give Ken
nedy a first-hand check on
progress in development of a
nuclear powered rocket for
space exploration.

E. Jack residence at route 1,
box 2B, Jacksonville, about
one-quarter mile from High
way 238, burned Monday aft
ernoon. U.S. forest service equip
ment from Ruch responded to
the blaze which destroyed the
four room building. ,
Jack and his two younger
daughters, ages 4 and 6, were
in the back yard of the resi
dence when he noticed flames
through a window. Some bed
ding was saved.
Mrs. Jack and an older
daughter were not at home at
the time. The family is stay
ing with friends.
Cause of the blaze is not
known, but it was believed to
have started near a heater.

a proto'ype nuclear reactor
for the rocket which this
country hopes to put into
space by 1967.
Remote Control Used
The Kiwi reactor, named
for the bird that does not
fly, was test-run for 260 sec

radioactively hot and its dis
assembly is being carried on
by remote control.
The President will leave
Washington by j t early Fri
day and will return on an
overnight flight that will put
him back at his White House
desk Monday morning. After
a fast round of briefings and
inspections at Omaha, Los
Alamos and Albuquerque, N.
M., and Jackass Flats, Nev.,
the President will relax at
Palm Springs, Calif., Saturday
night and Sunday.
