ISSZt Beautiful Cameo A Keiult Of Biology, Craftimanship It was biology, helped along of course by body chemistry, rather than geology that made possible the beautiful cameo ! you may have admired in a 1 ring, a bracelet or as a lava liere suspended on a chain around her neck. The body of a living marine animal created the material from which was cut the exquisite J beauty of the cameo. There j are, of course, stones com posed of variously colored layers thai can be cut and fashioned but the most exotic of the cameos are cut from the shell of a marine mollusk. Precious gems are usually the result of geological ac tion. Tremendous pressures and almost ageless time, un der the right conditions, cre ate most precious gems Ge ology works in marvelous ways, but it takes immeas urable eons of time to pro duce these materials and ob jects we later use for orna ments. Mollusk Shell But many cameos are cut i from the shell of a mollusk, i shelly material built up layer I by layer by the inner chem istry of a mollusk that spent I its life on the bottom of a ! tropical sea: an animal that pulled itself along over the sand eating dead animal mat ter and constantly taking into j its body sea water from which : it extracted the elements nec- j essary to build about itself a hard shell. j There are .several species of mollusks whose shells are i suitable for camera-cutting. , Probably the choicest is the Helmet, so universally used that it is commonly known as the Cameo Helmet. The King Helmet and the Princer Hel-1 met are also selected by some j craftsmen. In the shell made by the Cameo Helmet univalve, the body deposits the shelly ma terial in layers, each layer a different color. As the body of the mollusk grows the shell must be constantly enlarged. ! The various dark and light layers lend color and back ground contrast to the fin ished cameo. A while cameo image can be cut in such a way as to have a dark or i even black background. The : craftsman can, by selecting the proper shell and taking the material from the right place - the lip of the shell create . pink, brown, purpose or even yellowish images, and on whatever colored background he chooses, de pending on how deep or on j what layer of shell he wishes : to carve the image. Short Life It is a relatively short time Nature allows the mollusks , to live. It faces many dan-; gers, but under favorable j conditions the Helmet shell may reach an over all length : of 10 to 12 inches and may, I Including shell and animal , that fashioned the shell, I weigh as much as six or eight pounds. It will attain this size in half a dozen years. : In its natural environment, j the shell over the years will become encrusted with vari- j nus kinds of marine growth. After the animal is taken from the sea. the shell is cleaned with acid and shipped to the skilled craftsman who . can cut the face of a beautiful lady in the hard shell. With extreme patience and (harp tools the cameo cutter chips away sections of the piece of shell he has removed from the larger shell to form the image - usually the out line of a woman's face. The material is cut away so that the figure of the face stands out in relief, the direct oppo site to the intaglio, in which the figure is a depression. Cameo cutting is a very ancient art. It was practiced hy the old Babylonians and Phocncians many centuries ago and they, like the modern craftsman, used the shell of marine mollusks to create ob jects of beauty for ladies to wear a ornaments.
