These little bags serve as pulleys. For A ff'.i of the most import ant ones is near the shoulder 't J j'nt where it Aivrei serves as tort of pulley for the tendon that goes over it. Every so often one of these little bags will get inflamed and sore, and my hunch is that the trouble is part of a general tendency to arthritis, or per haps fibrositis, which is a milder disease of the tissues about the joints. For the often-met-with in flammation of the bursa near the shoulder joint, the best treatment I have ever found is with x-rays. With physio therapy, consisting of mas- cage, hot and cold baths, and diathermy (an electric method of heating the tissues deep under the skin) experts may help, but often they do not. In my experience, x-ray treat ment had quickly cured some two out of three cases. Is Vitamin E Useful Medicine? I am constantly getting let ters from people who tell me someone Iihs nearly sold them a lot of Vitamin E to be used as a cure for a disease of the heart or some other organ. My correspondents now want to know if the drug has any value. I have to answer that I have In my library books summarizing the world's knowledge about Vitamin E, and the editors of these books say that so far as they can judge, the claims that E cures this or that disease have not been confirmed. They there fore doubt if there is any good proof to indicate that E cures any disease. 1 never pre scribe it. Letting Patients Work Off Bills In the magazine "Medical Economics" for Oct. 8, there is an article by George W. Gooche which interests me. He tells how five doctors in a Lancaster, Calif., clinic have devised a way In which peo ple, perhaps living on social aecurily plus a small pension, and hence unable to pay the usual clinic fee, have been given an opportunity to "work off" their bills. These patients are fine, self respecting people who've al ways paid their bills, and so Jiatu rally now hate the thought of receiving charily. Today they arc so happy to be able to "earn their way." For instance, one retired man who needed an operation now paying for it by keeping j records for a local charity. He j is very happy because again he finds himself of use in the . community. Another patient, a woman who is a retired school teacher and confined to a wheelchair, is paying her bill and at the same time helping her city by making telephone calls for a social aeencv. Another patient, man of 70 who smashed his hip, is happy because his wife i is paying their bill by sewing on infants' clothing for a local : church. The clinic doctors feel that this new plan of theirs I is building much community wide good will. I know how great a need ! there is for this sort of kindly working together of laymen and doctors, if only because I get hundreds of letters from people who say, "I so need to go to a specialist, but on my little income I Just can't pay such a doctor s charges.
