Also suffering from the high water was Tou Velle park southeast of the bridge. Picnic areas along the river in TouVelle park were under water. I 4 MirAk '"lit' . A i r RAGING STREAMS Hun dreds of valley residents flocked to see the raging wa ters in Bear creek Sunday af ternoon. Bridges in downtown Medford were full of the cur ious and the roar of the water under the Interstate 5 struc ture made talking nearly Im possible. This section of the creek is downstream from Barnett rd. (Knackstedt photo) ROADWAY -South Riverside ave. was a small river during the height of the flood Sun day. This picture was taken after the waters had started to recede. Buildings all along Riverside and Central aves. suffered damage from high water. Flooding didn't stop the motorists, after checking their property many ventured forth to see the damage in oth er parts of town. (Knackstedt photo) x f TP j NO CUSTOMERS The playground at the Medford Shop- ping Center had no customers as rising waters flooded the roller coaster and loop-o-plane. Stores in the center were s sandbagged as waters approached, but water covered only a portion of the parking area paralleling East Jackson it. The shoulders of the freeway in the Biddle rd. area near here suffered erosion from the heavy downpour. Oregon highway officials said that the top soil, already seeded, was what washed away. (Knackstedt photo) COMPARISON-Both of these street scenes were typical of highways in Jackson county Sunday. At left the intersec tion at Prune and Cherry sts. had a lake in the adjoining field and onlv part of the 4SJ s'1CL'ts were covered with wa ter. Below left, a section of South Central ave. had high water which plagued motor ists and several vehicles stall ed when waves, kicked up by passing cars, drowned out ig nition. All types of vehicles were seen moving through the flooded streets. A small motor bike, however, viewed on one of the downtown streets, needed an additional push to gut it through the rag ing wateis (Knackstedt photos. Several cars allemnted to 3 park in the lot at the Pacific fruit and rroauce company and found wutcr well up the side of the vehicle. This wa ter was reported coming from J a creek in southwest Medford as was that running down Riverside ave. The small riv er on that avenue turned at Eighth St.. crossing the bridge to cascade down the access til road to Hawthorne park (be- E(H low). Some 100 feet of curb ing was taken out by the wa ter and the road was flooded. The breaks in the pavement were not cnused bv the water, but occurred when the con tractor in.slallcd the curbs and gutters.
