Shipley Ordered
To Die in Gas
Chamber Feb. 28
Newport, Ore. -dim- Larry
West Shipley, 21, stood before
Lincoln County Circuit Judge
Earl P. Conrad Wednesday
and heard the judge order him
to die in the state gas cham
ber Feb. 28.
Shipley, convicted of first
degree murder for last year'
fatal shooting of Linda Jen
Stevens, 16, Willamina, was
brought here late Wednesday
morning for the setting of his
execution date.
Judge Conrad set the date
in the afternoon, and Shipley
returned to the penitentiary
in Salem at 5:04 p.m.
Shipley's conviction and
death sentence is being appeal
ed to the U. S. Supreme Court
by the American Civil Liber
ties Union. The ACLU says
there is a question over the
fact that Shipley was held for
a prolonged period before his
appearance before a judge.
In Portland, Charles Davis,
Oregon head of the ACLU,
said the appeal .vas being
drawn up and would be made
shortly.
Salem (UPIi The governor's
conference on children and
youth opened here today, and
runs through Saturday.

Corvallis - "Film tests" are
proving effective In teaching
child care and family living at
Oregon State university and
originators envision that the
tests may be used in the fu
ture for predicting whether
some persons ought to become
teachers, or whether employ
ees are hkely to get along
with the boss.
The film tests are motion
pictures made of child behav
ior or classroom situations
that pose a problem or chal
lenge for the teacher or per
son in charge.
In the classroom, the film
tests are shown to students
who then have to decide what
should be done by the teacher
or leader to handle the situa
tion. The students' answers
are compared in discussion pe
riods with the opinions of a
panel of experts.
Developed Four Years
The unique film tests were
developed four years ago by
Dr. Del Schalock, acting chair
man of the department of fam
ily life at Oregon State uni
versity, in cooperation with
Dr. Jack Edling of the center
for teaching research, Oregon
College of Education, Mon
mouth. They hit upon the idea of
using motion picture tests to
measure understanding of
children's behavior. Since
then, the films have been used
by others in research projects.
A grant of $44,000 has been
received this year by Schalock
to study the possibilities of us
ing the films as predictors of
classroom behavior of pros
pective teachers.
The films have proved to be
a realistic and interesting tool
in teaching students to under
stand children and how to
handle them, according to
Schalock.
