Highway travelers were
craning their necks for a long j
look at the four horses, two
mules, a dog and Don Lee of ;
Council, Idaho, as they jour-j
neyed single file at a slow
pace. j
The pack train departed j
San Francisco on April 15 1
bound lor Washington, D.C., I
wilh a message for President
Kennedy. Lee and his pack
train have journeyed more
than 2.000 miles by the slow
method.
Camps by Roadside
Lee said he camps by the
roadside and in state parks
and frequently stops to work
a few days, preferably in
sporting goods stores where he
can tell sportsmen about the
wonders of the Idaho wilder
ness. ' Lee. a professional guide
who takes hunting and family
parties into the Idaho wilds,
taid he is making the trip for
several reasons including:
-To deliver a personal in
vitation to President Kennedy
to go hunting in Idaho during
the state's centennial celebra
tion in 1963.
-To dramatize that the old
west still exists and can be
reached by authentic pack
trains.
-And to bring to Americans
his philosophy on the value of
spending time among "God's
unspoiled creations."
Would Clear Thinking
Lee said, "if every business
man could spend two weeks
in the mountains it would
clear his thinking and improve
his judgment." ; .
The guide, dressed for the
trail in western clothes and
wearing a pair of well-worn
spurs on his boots, stopped at
the Kansas Statehouse and
visifpH with r.ov John Ander
son, who is known to be an
enthusiastic hunter himself.
Anderson offered Lee a cup
of coffee which he accepted
and then promptly shared
with his dog, Bandit.

Committee Favors
Benefit Increase

Committee on Medical Care
for the Aged unanimously fa
vors i.n increase in benefits
under the state's medicare
program for 1963-65, the Ore
gon Council on Aging was
told Wednesday.
Dr. Wesley Nicholson of
Eugene, chairman of the coun
cil and a member of the gov
cmor's medicare committee
wid the committee would hold
its final meeting Saturday in
Portland to polish up Its re
port which will go to Gov
Mark Hatfield.
Nicholson said the commit'
tee favors no change in the
present eligibility require
ments for medicare.
To Serve 12,000
He said the program being
recommended by the commit
ire was designed to serve
about 12.000 persons more
than 65 years of age during
the next bienniuin.
Less than 5.000 persons
have taken advantage of Ore
Ron's program this biennium
An estimated 55.000 persons
In the state were eligible for
some benefits during the bi
ennium.
The Portland meeting of the
governor's committee starts at
10 a m. in the Public Service
building Chairman is Dr. En
nis Kcizer of North Bend, also
chairman of the Oregon Wei
fare Commission.
The proposed medicare pro
gram requires approval of the
1963 legislature.
