School News
Sams Valley School
Charles Flint Jr., rincipal
of Sams Valley Elementary
school, has reported cn assem
bly recently at which time
the main program was the
presentation of a puppet show
presented by pupils in Mrs.
Helen Flint's fifth grade class.
Puppets were made by stu
dents who wrote their scripts
for four different plays given.
Each youngster presented the
character using their own
voices.
Cliff Vague was stage man
ager. "Adventures of Buster
Bear," was presented by Bar
bara Hilkey, Tonya Parker,
Wayne Ralph and Bruce Vin
cent. The second play eniitled,
"The Mouse Who " 'ent to the
Moon," was given by Ester
Meyer and Yvonne DeVoss.
"Three Little Pigs," the third
play, was presented by Stan
ley Taylor, Evelyn Duncan,
Kitt McRae, Mike King, Bar
bara Hansen and Kim Hunt,
the fourth entitled, "A Mad
Tea Party," was by Rita
Wray. Bobby Lambreeht,
Sherry Bolsford and Gary
Brown.
The assembly ended with
three numbers sung by the
chorus made up of fourth,
fifth, and sixth graders.
The school observed Na
tional Education Week with
the annual open house held
in conjunction with the PTA
meeting. About 65 adults at
tended the meeting and visit
ed the class rooms.
Teachers talked to parents
who saw the displays pre
pared by students in the
classrooms. Fall art displays
and Thanksgiving were the
themes used in most of the
rooms.
Fourth grade pupils made
fall designs of seeds.
For the open house, second
grades in Mrs. Rudella Ander
son's class room made a scene
of the first Thanksgiving.
Murals depicting the different
stories studied ' y fifth grad
ers were used in that room.
The enrollment at Sams
Valley school is now S9 stu
dents. Mike King, fifth trade, re
ceived the traveling dog pre
sented as a result of a recent
magazine drive. The eight
ball went to the sixth grade
for its participation in the
drive.
Parents visited the music
department in the gymnasium
during the open house where
they saw a display and dem
onstration of various music
instruments by Mrs. C. Nor
man Gail, school secretary.

camp may become the first
martyr of Nazism to achieve
Roman Catholic sainthood, It
was learned today.
The priest, Father Titus
BrancLsma, fought the Nazi at
tempt to turn the Catholic
press of Holland into a propa
ganda machine for Hitler
ideology.
He was put to death with
an injection of carbolic acid
in the extermination camp at
Dachau, Germany, on July
26, 1942. His body was cre
mated. The Carmelites, the order
to which Father Brandsma be
longed, have asked the bish
ops at the Ecumenical council
to request the Sacred Congre
gational rites.
McRcynolds Speaks Of Moral Frontier At Ashland Meeting

Three factors have affected
the Negro in America, he said.
First is the role of the mili
tary in helping to integrate
the races; the second, indus
trialization of the south, and
third is the rise of African
nationalism with various na
tions gaining their freedom,
McRcynolds explained.
Nothing has so profoundly
stirred the American Negro
as the rediscovery of his
African roots. If African na
tions can be free, why can not
the American Negro, t h e
speaker asked.
A Militant Negro
The new Negro is a militant
one no longer acquiescent to
white domination. He wants
neither to be white nor to be
African. He only wants to be
accepted as a person, then left
i alone. The Negro docs not
want to "marry your daugh
ter" nor does he want you to
marry his daughter, the field
I secretary said.
Since the Negro has accept
ed himself, he no longer needs
us to accept him, and our job
is lo know who we are so we
can let the Negro be who he
is, McRcynolds explained.
Saying that non-violence
always flows from deeply re-
1 hgious convictions, he pointed

j violent movement in the south
j to affect bus strikes and sit-ins
I at segregated places of busi
i ncss, the Negro is showing
: that someone is prepared to
accept the precept of the gos
pel of accepting suffering to
provide change. The Negro
sees the gospel as a more revo
lutionary document than Karl

Justice, McRcynolds added.
Although violence is used
i against him, if the Negro uses
i counter-violence he loses the
'sympathy of the people, Mc
j Reynolds stated.

In accepting the role of suf
fering, the Negro has liberated

maintain a system of hatred
which has been turned Inward
by the conscience of the south,
according to the speaker.
McRcynolds suggested that
individuals who want to pro
mote equal rights in the south
should talk to their congress
men about civil rights and let
them know that equivocations
would not be tolerated. He
added that northern Demo
crats sometimes preach a good
strong civil rights program
here where there Is no prob
lem but when hack in Con
gress, there Is horse trading
with southern Democrats for
votes.
McRcynolds tour of the
west is sponsored by the
American Friends society. He
also spoke to Southern Ore
gon college students in assem
bly. Walter Arron, past chair
man of the Ashland Human
Rights council, welcomed the
guests. Vincent Oredson in
troduced the speaker.
