Questions Noted
On VA Services
Veterans and their families
ask many questions regarding
the benefits the government
provides them through Veter
ans Administration.
Some representative quer
ies and answers are listed here
by the Jackson county veter
ans' service officer. Addition
al information is available at
his office on the first floor of
the Jackson county courthouse
annex.
Q Is Veterans Adminis
tration medical care available
to peacetime veterans?
A Yes, but they must
have service-connected disabil
ities. A new law enacted by
the 87th Congress extends the
privilege to receive VA hos
pital and medical care to
peacetime veterans having
noncompensable, service-connected
disabilities.
Q Can a veteran pay off
his GI loan before it becomes
due and not be penalized?
A Yes. A GI loan may
be partially or fully paid at
iny time without penalty. Part
payments may not be less than
one monthly installment or
$100, whichever is less.
Q May a veteran who
has no service-connected ill
ness enter a VA hospital and
pay for his care?
A No. The government
extends hospitalization bene
fits free of charge to those
veterans with service-connected
disabilities and to those
veterans with nonservice-con-nected
disabilities who cannot
afford to pay for their hos
pitalization. All other veter
ans are expected to use non
VA hospitals.
Freedom Center
Report Requested
Salom-OIPli - Secretary of
State Howell Appling Jr. has
asked for a campaign expense
report from the Freedom Cen
ter in Portland, headed by
Walter Huss.
Appling said a letter re
questing the report would be
mailed to Huss.
Appling said he wanted the
report on literature that
"sought to bring about the
defeat of Edith Green." The
Democratic c o n g r esswoman
was returned to a fifth term.
Appling said the literature,
bearing the Freedom Center
name, carried a disclaimer.
But he said that was not
enough to exclude it from
Oregon's law requiring re
ports on campaign expenses.
"We feel that this literature
falls under the law and we
intend to enforce the law,"
Appling said.
It was the second said re
quest from Appling, who last
week directed Harrison
Spangler to file a campaign
expense report on his book,
"The Record of Wayne
Morse," which is critical of
the Democratic senator.
