ing postal employees and ma
chines, it was explained at the
conference.
Through the cooperation of
business executives and gov
ernment officials, national
and local mail is beginning to
flow into the nation's post of
fices on an around-the-clock
basis, not chiefly in the late
afternoon. Users of mail serv
ice are urged to drop mail at
the post office during less
busy times of the day.
Final program results have
meant faster delivery of reg
ular business mail, greater
economy in postal operations
due to more efficient use of
manpower, equipment and
space, and better working con
ditions for postal employees
Accelerated Program
Recent introduction of the
accelerated business collection
delivery program into Boise
and Portland post offices al
lows mail dropped in desig
nated boxes by 11 a.m. to be
delivered no later than 3 p.m.
the same day. This has been
successful with little or no
additional cost, conferees were
told.
A zone improvement pro
gram is being introduced, al
so, throughout the nation.
Through the cooperation of
the telephone company, a
postal zone number is being
listed in the telephone direct
ory's yellow pages. These zone
numbers will be used instead
of the present name and ad
dress system, it was noted.
Once in operation, the pro
gram is expected to greatly
decrease the number of times
a letter will be handled in the
post office, thereby increasing
the service efficiency and
mail handling costs.

In the letter to Mrs. Eagle

destroyed. He said that he was
inside a building at work dur

He noted that the base was
housing and feeding service

other areas, with the "chow

civilians and dependents as we
do military personnel."
