Only Human Need
To the Editor: Mr. Robert J.
Howard, in commenting (11
22) on UNICEF's Halloween
Trick or Treat program, en
gages in some curious mental
gymnastics. Commendably, he
agrees that it "demonstrates
the admirable virtue of char
ity in being concerned lor
needy people." However, re
ferring to the letter of the
Medford Chapter of the Amer
ican Association for the Unit
ed Nations in the 1118 issue
of the MT, he accuses the au
thor of railing "with a notice
able lack of restraint and pru
dence, against those who re
fuse to believe communist na
tions, upon receiving UNICEF
funds, will in turn demon
strate the same virtue of char
ity." In exposing the so-called
"Freedom Center" of Port
land as the source of the leaf
let (its name is on it, shame
lessly) which told children un
truthfully that the Trick or
Treat money they collected
goes to communist dominated
countries, that earlier letter
rendered an important public
service. It is perfectly silly
to say that such exposure of
an unpardonable evil is to
"rail" against opponents of
communism (which includes
all of us in the American As
sociation for the United Na
tions). Although he praised UNI
CEF's charity. Mr. Howard
seems to have missed com
pletely the point that "true
charity knows nothing of pol
itics, only human need." As
our Lord dramatized in His
parable of the Good Samari
tan (since "Jews have no deal
ings with Samaritans."-John
4:9), that good soul's only
concern was to meet urgent
human need, refusing to let
ill feelings between the two
peoples deter Him. '
Moreover, let Mr. Howard
know that very little of the
Trick or Treat money or any
other '1NICEF funds go to the
recipient countries. UNICEF
spends the major portion of
the contributions it receives
on supplies purchased in the
donating countries; 85 per
cent of U.S. contributions
right here at home. Too, the
recipient countries agree to
match- UNICEF funds with
comparable funds, supplies,
or technical aid. They also
must agree to allow UNICEF
personnel into their countries
to handle and supervise the
distribution of UNICEF sup
plies. Let the needlessly suspi
cious Mr. Howard also be in
formed that there was noth
ing sinister in "tracking
down" the source of that vile
leaflet in question. It really
required no sleuthing. Alarm
ed parents brought them to
public attention.
We repeat, UNICEF's work,
like all true charity, knows
no politics, only human need.

Campaign Costs
To the Editor: I realize that
the opinions of the columnists
in the M-T are not necessarily
those of the M-T, but I think
it unfortunate that a column
like that of Frank Jenkins,
M-T 1121 should be included
without some editorial com
ment. He listed the campaign ex
penditures of Morse and Unan
der and then went on to com
ment that it was a sad reflec
tion on our system that a man
should spend more on the cam
paign than the position pays.
He is inferring that those two
candidates are quite well
heeled and have ulterior mo
tives while the rest of us just
sit on our hands and ignore
the contest. I would bet Mr.
Jenkins that neither candidate
spent even 10 per cent of those
figures out of his own re
sources. Of course the Kennedys un
doubtedly spent millions to
get their jobs but that's an
other story.

To the Editor: Just after the
election, we saw an editorial
saying it was silly that Port
land, La Grande, Ashland and
Medford to have defeated the
fluoridation issue. It makes
one wonder.
Is It being silly not to force
those who do not and cannot
drink doctored water? Dur
ing the campaign we found
some families who are giving
their children fluoride tablets
or drops, but there would be

them, even to fluoride tooth
paste. Is it being silly not to
force that child to drink that
which is injurious to him?
"But who so shall offend one

Everyone has to have water.
While those who want it can
get fluoride at the drug store
with less expense, it would be
unlawful to force it on those
who cannot take it. My hus
band has to take Penicillin, I
am allergic to it, is it being
silly for his doctor not to
force me to take it also? My
husband is allergic to eggs.
Should I put eggs in all my
cooking because I like them
and can have them for myself
when I want them?
Only one child under ten
is to be benefited (which is
only about one child out of
100 population according to
the records) and everyone has
to go to the expense of pay
ing for a mass medication and
equipment, while only a few
cents would take care of that
one child's need. If it is silly
not to force fluoridation on
those who do not need it, then
I would say it is being crazy
or criminal to force it on
anyone. '
It has been said it is not a
health measure but a political
issue. It was not the doctors
or dentists who thought this
up to begin with, but some
one who sold the idea to the
USPHS for a profit, spear
headed by the invisible gov
ernment. Any yet it has never
been proven to be of benefit.
The Bible says, "Prove all
things, hold fast that which
is good. Abstain from all ap
pearance of evil."
Remember there is a reck
oning day for everyone to give
an account of their deeds.

Spare The Rod
To the Editor: In your edi
torial you quoted from the
"Good Book" the saying
"Spare the rod and spoil the
child."
By the "Good Book" you
mean the Bible. Please give
chapter and verse where the
words may be found. I have
never seen it.

betimes." The more familiar
form of the quotation is
found in a number of other
writings, including John Skel
ton (circa 14S0 1529), "There
is nothynge that more dys
pleaseth God Than from
theyr children to spare the
rod"; and Ralph Venning
(1649), "They spare the rod
and spoyl the child."

Drugs Investigated
London-WD-British doctors
are investigating "one or two"
drugs other than Thalidomide
which may have deformed
10.000 British babies between
1954 and 1960, it has been
learned. .
The College of General
Practicioners said it has told
the health ministry of suspi
cions that the drugs, taken
by mothers during early preg
nancy, may be responsible for
the deformities.

First Art Carney narrates
Serge Prokoficff's "Peter and
the Wolf," in which the com
poser associates an instru
ment of the orchestra and a
tune with each character of
the story. Today's version, in
addition, is dramatized by
charming puppets, the result
of the craftsmanship and in
genuity of Bil and Cora Baird.
After the conclusion of the
original "Peter and the Wolf,
the wolf and the dog goion
to sing some new songs writ
ten by Paul Weston, based on
themes by Prokofieff.
Humorist Ogden Nash wrote
the special lyrics. He later
confessed this was one of his
most challenging assignments.
A case in point is one of the
songs which is sung by a near
sighted dog to a duck he mis
takenly believes is a beautiful
water spaniel.
On Monday night actor
Paul Muni will make his first
television appearance since
1958 on "Saints and Sinners
at 8;30 p.m. on KMED-TV.
Mr. Muni will portray a
crusty 93-year-old who casu
ally announces his plans to
get a divorce on the eve of
his 75th wedding anniversary.
Actors appearing with Mr.
Muni in this humorous drama
claiming "the old ham . . .
is having the time of his
life."
a comedy-with-musie revue.
In one skit, "Bird Brain of
Alcatraz," Benny and Hope
co-star with 250 trained birds.
Unfortunately "The World
of Jacqueline Kennedy" and
"Shakespeare: Soul of An
Age," two of NBC's very spe
cial specials scheduled for
Friday, will not be seen in
Medford. The hours these two
shows will be telecast nation
ally are committed to the
ABC network by KMED-TV.
They hope to be able to pre
sent these shows on a delayed
basis when prints become
available.
Salem - The state marine
board in Salem has asked
that boat owners who have
changed their address during
the past year and who have
not notified the board to do
so as soon as possible. The
boating law places this re
sponsibility on the boat
owner.
The marine board is anx
ious that their records are
kept up-to-date. Tha 1963 an
nual boat license registration
forms will be printed early
in December showing the
boat owner's address as list
ed in the board's current rec
ords. By preprinting the reg
istration forms, the board is
able to mail the boat owners
their annual license on the
same day the application Is
received.
