Auto Tires Object
Of Competition
Lonq Before Use
New York -iUPIi- Like every
thing else about the car you
drive, the lire on which It rolls
is an object of intense compe
tition long before you are
traveling along the road above
it.
There is a struggle tor 'he
lion's share of all things which
go into it, the rubber, the oth
er chemical compounds, the
cord which will be in it. What
the cords shall be has drawn
interest in recent develop
ments. Philip E. Robinson, execu
tive vice president of Tyrex
Inc., said today that more than
98 per cent of all the original
(tire) equipment on passenger
automobiles produced in the
United States will contain
rayon cords for the fifth
straight year, and that rayon
cord producers are working
more and more on the truck
tire market.
Program Inteniified
"The Industry is just be
ginning to find what it can
do," said George 1. Rounds,
vice president in charge of
Tyrex field operations. "We
always have had a research
program in rayon, and It is in
tensified." A reason for the recent at
tention drawn to rayon was
the decision of E. I. du Pont
de Nemours to withdraw from
the manufacture of the ma
terial. But Du Pont also had
announced in August that it
planned experimental produc
tion of a new nylon yarn for
tire cord which would have
diminished "flat spotting."
The tendency to "flat spot
ting" which is demonstrated
by nylon cord tires is one of
the selling points for the use
of rayon cord. Nylon cord,
while long-wearing and tough,
has a tendency to stretch; any
one who has let his automobile
stand outdoors in cold weather
may be familiar with the
"flat spotting" tendency of
some tires; they thump when
they pass over the area upon
which tile tire has rested.
But the Tyrex officials are
under no illusions about the
efforts of producers of nylon
to overcome the tendency of
the nylon cord, which would
aid nylon's penetration into
the lire cord market.
"The performance and the
cost of operation for rayon
cord tires is very good," said
Rounds. "And we now are
working on a truck tire test
ing program which makes us
very optimistic about what
can be done. When there's
competition, as there is in
every industry, then you can
really buckle down to see
what can be done to hold your
place and improve it. That's
what we're doing."
Tyrex is a non-profit cor
poration, formed in 1958 by
five major manufacturers of
rayon tire yarn, to promote
the use of the cord and to en
force production standards for
Tyrex rayon tire cord and
yarn.

"I am what you could call

Adenauer Delays
Speech on Crisis
Bonn, Germany (UPII - Chan
cellor Konrari Adenauer, 86,
has postponed a scheduled nation-wide
television speech on
the crisis in his coalition gov
ernment from tonight until
Friday night.
There was no reason imme
diately given for the postponement.
Adenauer had been expect
ed to explain to the German
people tonight his position on
the controversy over Defense
Minister Franz Joseph Strauss
and the "Spiegel affair."
All 15 cabinet ministers of
Adenauer's Christian Demo
cratic Union offered their res
ignations Tuesday, apparently
lo enable the chancellor to
form a new cabinet without
Strauss.
Informed sources predicted
Adenauer would not announce
Strauss' ouster until after the
state elections in Bavaria Sunday.

Long of Louisiana Tuesday.
Firemen battled the flames
for three hours but the house
was a total loss with damage
estimated at $5,000. The mod

in Giving Thanks for Our Blessings . .
These blessings come in the form of many things; the kindly neighbor next
door, the considerate driver in the other car, the tolerant creditor, the amiable
policeman, the understanding wife, the loving children and thousands of other
dy-by-dy blessings that many of us take for granted.
On a broader scope, we're blessed with capable leadership in community,
state and nation and with the freedom to choose them. We're blessed with

"Can you guess what my de
ficiency was?"
"You weren't using the
right underarm sprays and
creams?" I asked.
"No, it was something far
more serious than that," Prim
said. "I didn't like dirty
jokes."
He paused and reached for
another plover egg while I
pondered the significance of
his revelation.
"It wasn't that I necessarily
objected to them," Prim con
tinued. "Dirty jokes didn't
offend me. I just didn't care
for them. I didn't think they
were very amusing.
"A fellow would slop by
my desk and tell me the
latest story making the
rounds and in the lime it
took lo walk to the water
cooler I would forget the
punch line.
"In other words, I was the
missing link in the circula
tion of smutty yarns. You
can't imagine what a handi
cap that was.
"After I had been on the job
a few days, my co - workers
would begin asking each other
'What's the matter with
Clyde? Is he some kind of anti
social nut or something?'
"The next thing I knew the
boss would call me in and tell
me that I didn't seem to be
fitting in very well and that
I might be better off if I
found a new job. It was very
discouraging."
"You appear to be doing all
right now," I observed. "How
did you conquer your prob
lem?" "Naturally I went lo an
analyst," Prim said. "I spent
hours on the couch while he
rummaged around in my sub
conscious. Finally he tracked
down the trouble. When I was
a baby my brother hit me on
the head with a copy of 'Lady
Chatterly's Lover'."
"Did that discovery remove
your mental block?" I in
quired. "Completely," Prim said.
