It's always disappointing to
a dog owner to buy his pel
a Christmas gift toy, only to
find that Fido won't even
look at it. Bob Bartos, mana
ger of the Friskies Research
Kennels, says that whether
your pet is a pup or an old
time, it's best to know just
what type of plaything he'll
enjoy.
If you're buying the gift
for your own dog, you prob
ably know what he likes, but
be careful that the toy will
not be harmlul. Steer clear
of wooden objects or toys
that are apt to splinter, and
even though a toy may catch
your eye or your fancy
remember that it's for Fido
to enjoy.
Try to match the size of the
dog to the size of the toy.
The one exception to this rule
can be a "tug-of-war" toy.
Whether the dog is a toy poo
dle or a big beagle, a tug
toy with which he can play
tug-of-war with his master is
generally a hit.
A chemical bone is a per
ennial favorite of pooches and
is available in sizes for ev
ery breed, so buy the size
that Fido can cope with. La
tex toys also come in a wide
assortment of sizes and amus
ing shapes, such as hands, all
types of cute animals, veg
etables, and balls.
If Fido is afraid of squeaky
noises, choose one without a
squeaker. For puppies who
are teething, squeakless toys
are safest, as puppies gener
ally chew, and the small met
al squeaker may get lodged
in his throat. Usually, the
tccther is safest with a leath
er toy.
