GOING BROKE - William V.
James, St. Louis, Mo., auto
dealer and founder of Boys
Town of Missouri, says that he '
may be forced out of business !
because of wholesale thelts
from his auto agency by teen
age boys. James said he was
now paying $1,000 a month
for insurance and the agencies
have threatened to cancel his
policies. James said he also
had evidence that most of the
bnys are from "good'1 families
who have every advantage in
the world. (UPI)
Playing Cards
Ease Boredom
For Children
New York (UPI) Used play
ing cards can be the ticket to
new worlds of philanthropy,
Camcs or projects for your
children- especially when,
boredom strikes.
Take philanthropic proj
ects. Give them your own
decks of used cards. Suggest
they use them as the nucleus
of a boxful to be collected in
a house-to-house campaign in
the block and given to a local
hospital.
Or they can mail the cards
tn another worthy unit, the
Kmergency Aid of Pennsyl
vania (1629 Locust si., Phila
delphia). Women belonging to this
organization turn clean play
ing cards into braille cards.
The cards then are sent free
to blind persons all over the
world.
The emergency aid never
lacks volunteers. 11 just lacks
cards!
Egg-Spoon Race
If play's the aim on a
snowy or rainy afternoon, ex
plain how the youngsters can
have an egg and spoon race
with .a playing card and
marble.
Or collect all the broken
decks in the house and teach
them to play war. Tile more
cards there are. the longer the
game lasts. War is a good
game for two. three or more
The object: to win all the
cards.
It's played Ihis way: First,
divide the pile between the
children. Each stacks the
cards face down in front with
out looking at them. Then
each plays the lop card of her
pile, laying it face up on the
table. Either player may lead
or both may play at the same
time.
The one who plays the
higher card takes both and
puts them face down at the
bottom of her pile. Both play
the next top card and the
higher card wins. The play
continues until one player has
All the cards.
Cupcake Decorations
Other "old card'' projects
for the small fry:
--Make sandwich or cup
rage decorations out of two
cut-out card faces glued
around a toothpick.
Decorate an empty cof
fee can with cards and fill
with bridge mix.
Staple old playing cards
at intervals on lengths of rib
bon to use as a play room di
vider after the fashion of a
bead curtain.
Make bathtub boats for
the neighborhood children by
using a playing card for raft
and a skewer threaded
through a playing card for
the mast and sail.
Create fancy gift wrap
pings by first wrapping the
present in white tissue paper,
then gluing playing cards to
the tissue or stapling them to
rihhon streamers.
All you need for these rlo-it-
vourself projects: Glue, scis
sors, and odds and ends of
decoration like ribbon and se
quins, plus, the old cards.
Slart Ihcm off with a few
ideas, such as the nm s men
