flippers or wings otf," in tiie
animal world would mean
about the same thing, for
wings, flippers, fins or hands
are similar.
Place an alligator in an up
right position, forget or over
look the tail, and you will be
surprised to notice how human-like
the body is, the fore
paws being equivalent to our
arms. The same similarity
exists between man and frog.
Even a turtle, viewed from
the front and upright, can
represent pretty accurately a
very broad fat man.
Arm-Like Wings
The same condition is evi
dent with nearly all animals,
with the exception of snakes
and insects. Even with birds,
the wings are arm-like. The
flippers of the whale, por
poise, seal and sea lipn are
all modified arms, unfortu
nately, of course, without the
fingers or the hands that
make the human arms so
adaptable. With the porpoise's
native intelligence it is rather
startling to think what the
animal could have accomplish
ed had it been equipped with
opposable thumbs.
The fingernails of the hu
man hand are little different,
either in purpose or actual
use, than the claws of the
cat, dog or any other animal.
Even the claws of the bird
are similar. The dog with only
four fingers on the paw has
another one, thumblike but
not opposable, farther up on
the leg. It's really a rudimen
tary remainder of a thumb,
but it has lost its usefulness.
The wings of a bird are
really arms, feather-covered
and of course, very useful as
far as the bird is concerned.
And strangely enough, each
wing has a "not so reason
able" facsimile of a thumb.
Next time you "pick" a chick
en notice the "little thumb"
at the end of each wing; never
fear it will be there and it s
a "thumb," the nearest thing
to a thumb the chicken can
ever possess. Imagine, a
thumb but no fingers.
of the feet. But feet and pnws
are so interchangeable they
answer the animal's purpose,
whatever we call them.
All paws, flippers, fins or
wings, as well as hands, are
according to plan and all are
adaptable to some consider
able degree. All are marvels
of creation; all organs ci
touch, prehension or locomo
tion; all with highly special
ized muscles, capable of start
ling adaptations, and similar
to hands and feet; all serving
their owners for the purpose
intended; all these "cotton
picking flippers, paws or
wings."

night by Baroness Maria von
Trapp when she spoke for
members of the Rogue Rivet
Valley Knife and Fork club
at the Rogue Valley Country
club.
This advice, she explained,
has been the guide for the
we I world-famous Trapp Family
Singers.
The speaker, now inn
keeper at the Trapp Family
lodge at Stowe, Vl., reviewed
the history of her family.
Young Maria, a novitiate in
Austria, was loaned by the
convent to the household of
widower Baron Gcorg von
Trapp as governess for his
seven motherless children.
Married the Father
"I fell in love with the chil
dren and married the father,"
the baroness explained.
Their singing was only a
hobby, she continued, until
Father Franz Wasner, chap
lain at the family's estate
chapel, encouraged them to
sing a cappclla.
The speaker told how the
family fled Austria in 1938,
"hiking" out of the country
leaving behind their ancestral
ing into a livelihood, they
had to move to France, Hol
land, Denmark, Sweden, and
Norway, before they had saved
enough money to sail for the
United States.
Reviews Trips
Baroness von Trapp re
viewed their many coast-lo-coasl
and foreign tours und
how in 1942. when visiting
Vermont which reminded
them of their native Austria,
they purchased a 700-acre
farm.
The Alpine-styled home
they built had 144 window
boxes. The Trapp family's latest
project is fighting commu
nism in the South Pacific is
lands. The Baroness told of
their visits to the various is
lands talking with the mis
sionaries to find out what
could be done. It was during
this trip that Father Wasner
stayed in Fiji Island to train
the natives, who will in turn
visit the other islands to
spread Christianity.
People Too Busy
The Baroness said that
many people are too busy
with themselves to think of
others. She concluded with
the last line of the final song
of the Broadway play. "The
Sound of Music," which is
about the Trapp family,
"Love isn't love until you
give it away."
After her talk, the Baroness
told of her lodge in Vermont
at the request of Otto Frohn
mayor, club president.
Mrs. Gilbert Parker, a guest
of the John S. Days from
Australia, presented the
speaker with a kangaroo pin,
thanking her for "all the nice
things you said about Aus
tralia." The speaker was intro
duced by Mrs. Jack Crawford.
