r(viJ sell what the
names of their
West stores imply
that they sell. My father, for
instance, sold hardware.
When my father comes to
visit us, as he is doing now,
he has some trouble adjust
ing to the merchandising prac
tices found in the suburbs of
a large city.
The other afternoon my
wife heard my father say he
was going over to our neigh
borhood drug store to pick
up a bottle of aspirin tablets.
"Why don't you gn to the
tailor shop?" my wife said.
"That's closer."
My father gave her a fun
ny look. When she was out
of earshot he asked me if she
had been feeling all right.
Sensing the reason for
his perplexity, I explained
that the tailor shop had a
rug counter where he would
be able to buy aspirin.
"Okay," he said. "While
I'm out, I might as well drop
off my suit to be cleaned and
pressed."
"Don't do that," I told him.
"Our drycleaning is picked up
by the milkman."
"The milkman?"
"Yes. The milkman also has
a laundry and drycleaning '
route." i
''I see," my father said.!
"Where do you buy your j
milk?"
"Oddly enough we get most
of it from the milkman," I
replied. "When we run short
we can pick up an extra
quart down at the gasoline
station on the corner."
My father said that if we
would let him know what day
the milk would be delivered
he would send out a bundle
of soiled shirts to be laun
dered. !
"The milkman doein't j
axe our laundry, I said.
"Just the drycleaning. We
lake our laundry to the
bakery."
"Did you say the bakery?"
"Yes, the bakery out here ;
serves as a pick-up station for j
a downtown laundry, which
has a cheaper rate than the!
one the milkman represents." j
"I suppose it would be fool- j
ish of me to ask where you
buy your bread?" my father i
said.
"We usually get that at the j
meat market," I said. i
My wife came back into the j
room and asked my father if
he would buy some stamps
while he was out getting the j
aspirin.
"There is a post office sub
station in the gift shop," she
said.
My falher said he had
changed his mind about going
after aspirin. He said he be
lieved he would wait and let
the garbage collector write
him a prescription.

Decreases Stockpile
Washington -I1IPU- Sen. Har
ry F. Byrd (D-Va.) said Sun
day that only the transfer of
$128 million worth ol cotlon
prevented the total value of
government stockpiles from
rising again during August.
Byrd, making his monthly
report on the stockpile, said
the cotton was transferred to
the Commodity Credit Corp.
Its transfer made a net de
cline in the stockpile of $64
million, he said. Had it not
been moved, the stockpile
value would have risen by
$7,409,848.
