Mental Health Group
Postpones Meeting
A meeting of the board of
directors of the Jackson Coun
ty Mental Health association
usually held the third Mon
day evening of each month
has been postponed until
Thursday, Nov. 29, according
to Dewey Wilson, chairman.
At that time, there will be
a public meeting when a panel
will discuss local facilities
available for helping families
with mental and emotional
problems.
The panel will include Cir
cuit Court Judge James M.
Main, Miss Ethel Shumway of
the Family Counseling and
Child Guidance clinic, Miss
France Clinic, county health
department, the Rev. Fred
Evans, First Christian church,
and Don MuLarrin, special
education director Ash land
schools. Wilson will moder
ate the panel.
The meeting, to which any
one interested is invited, will
be held in the board room of
the Rogue Valley hospital at
3 p.m.

Overheated Furnace - Med
ford firemen were called at
12.53 p.m. Saturday when an
overheated furnace was re
ported in a home at 2208 East

Smith. Earlier Saturday, at
11:50 a.m., a flue fire was re
ported at a home at 2620 Ten
nessee dr., owned by Stanley
Dolbec. No damage was re
ported in cither case.

a cigarette burned part of a
couch at the home of Stev
Harris, 560 Siskiyou blvd.,
Ashland, at 3:34 p.m. Friday.

Injury Reported Mr. and
Mrs. Edward Smith of Horn
brook, Calif., have received
word that their son, Dr. Ed
ward M. Smith of Orland,
Calif., had been critically in
jured in an auto accident
northwest of Orland. The car
Dr. Smith was driving was
hit by a pickup truck driven
by 17-ycar-old Howard Reed
of Orland, who was killed.
Mr. and Mrs. Smith left im
mediately to be with their
son at Mercy hospital in Sac
ramento, Calif. Dr. Smith is
a brother of Robert Smith,
with Pacific Power and Light
company in Medford.

safe driver award for driving
30,000 miles without an acci
dent or traffic violation while
assigned to the 38th transpor
tation battalion's 594th com
pany in Germany.
Shepherd, a heavy truck
driver in the company, ar
rived overseas on his tour of
duty in September, 1959. His
wife, Betty, is with him in
Germany.

Funeral services for Pearl
M. Kaplan, 53, of 936 Grant
st., Medford, who died Satur
day in a local hospital, will
be held in the Conger-Morris
Downtown chapel at 1:30 p.m.
Monday. A reader from the
Bahi Faith will officiate.
Committal will be private
in Hillcrest Memorial park
with Conger-Morris Funeral
directors in charge of ar
rangements.
Mrs. Kaplan was born in
Brooklyn, N.Y., Aug. 27, 1909.
Her husband, Jack Kaplan,
preceded her in death in 1959.
Mrs. Kaplan worked as a
cashier for Western Union for
two years.
Surviving is one daughter,
Mrs. Betty Lakey, Laramie,
Wyo.: two sisters, Mrs. Rose
Kornblum, Miami, Fla., and
Mrs. Ann Lew, New York;
two brothers, Walter Light,
New York; and Harry Light,
New York; a son-in-law, Capt.
Richard Lakey, U S A F., Lar
aniie, Wyo., and four grand
children. Those who wish may con
tribute to the Heart Fund.
The body will lie in slate
until 9 p.m. Sunday.

Samford was a veteran of
World War I and served in

and communications. He was
wounded in the Argonnc and
served from June, 1918, to
July, 1919.
