Rogue Valley Knife and Fork

Baroness Maria von Trapp
will speak at Rogue Valley
Country club.
The Baroness, mother of
the world-known Trapp fam
ily singers, now is engaged In
the role of inn keeper at the
Alpine-styled Trapp Family
lodge al Stowe, Vermont. She
is the widow of Baron Gcorg
von Trapp.
Before her marriage the
baroness was a novitiate in
Austria and was loaned by the
abbey to the Salzburg house
hold of the World War I hero,
Baron von Trapp, as govern
ess for his seven motherless
children. The baron fell in historian
love with her and made her
his wife.
In open defiance of the
Nazi invaders of their home
land,' the Tinpps and their
family priest, Father Franz
Wasncr, who had blended
the family voices into a un
ique choral ensamble, fled
Austria, to build a new life
for themselves in a new world.
Their story is t ho basis for
the Rodgcrs and llammer
stcin musical, "The Sound of
Music," currently popular.
The group was disbanded aft
er 20 years of world tours
during which they appeared
in more than 2000 concerts.
The baroness now is en
deavoring to raise funds for
the operation of a Catholic
Mission station at Naiseieland
on the island of Villi Lvv in
Ihe Fiji group, where Msgr.
Wasncr and a native priest
are already at work building
the structures that will lie
headquarters of the mission
ary training program. The
baroness recently visited Ihe
area through a special invita
tion of t he Papal Delate for
the South Pacific. Otherwise
the baroness occupies her
time between lecturing and
writing with the guests at the
lodge.

the Salem Civic choir at ihe

Salem Shirley Satterfield
Jones, who was Miss Jackson
county in 1960 and runner-up
for Miss Oregon, will play one
of lire leading roles in the
Salem Civic choir's production
of "Show Boat" this week
end, November 16-17, at the
Salem armory auditorium.
Mrs. Jones will play Mag
nolia Hawks, daughter of the
captain of the "Cotton Blos
som.
A 11)60 graduate of Medford
High school, Mrs. Jones at
tended the University ef Ore
gon and will enroll at Willam
ette university this winter.
In addition to her success
in the Miss Oregon contest,
Mrs. Jones was Miss March of
Dimes in 1D59 and Miss Easy
Vision for the Hoffman Tele
vision corporation. She is a
John Robert Powers' model.
In high school she won an
award for best actress from
the National Thespian society,
a scholarship to Ripon univer
sity in Wisconsin from the
National Forensic league and
the award for outstanding mu
sicianship from the U of O
in 15!.
Mrs. Jones is the daughter
ol Mr. and Mrs. Cecil Satter
field, 1815 Prune street, Med
tord. Her husband, Gordon
Jones, plays the role of Frank
SchuU, half of a comedy-dance
team in "Show Boat." He also
designed the sets for the pro
duction. The Salem Civic choir is
composed of some 50 people
who sing for their own enjoy
ment. Earlier in the year they
presented "Oklahoma!"
