One out of every 10 stu

is working for a master's or
doctor's degree, according to
a Graduate School report pre

in the past decade, university
leaders emphasize.
Almost half of the graduate
students this year, 547, are
majoring in school of science
fields, and almost half of them
are working for doctor's de
grees. Chemistry has the most
master's and doctor's degree
candidates enrolled, 12 8.
Mathematics, which has made
the most spectacular gains in
Graduate School enrollment,
Is next with 70. Other science
departments with sizeable
numbers of graduate students
are physics, microbiology,
general science, zoology, bot

family life.
The 1.105 Graduate School

175 women; 408 doctor's de
gree candidates and 697
master's degree candidates.
Graduate work at the mas
ter's level is given in nearly
100 different fields of study
at Oregon State, Hansen
noted. The doctor of philoso
phy degree is available in 70.
fields of study in 30 different
departments. The doctor of

Americans Grow
Beyond Bed Size
New York - ilTD - Ameri
cans have grown beyond their
bed size - and most of them
don't know the fact.
That observation comes
from a trade group which
said that "since 1900, the
average height of both men
and women has increased two
inches. At the turn of the cen
tury, one of every 25 Ameri
can men reached the six foot
mark. Today one of every five
men is six feet tall."
The gain in average height
for women is similar, Eight
een per cent of the girls now
are five feet, seven inches
tall, compared to four per
cent in 1900.
