Amazing LA
Fifth Victory
By United Press International
The amazing Los Angeles
Blades are skittering along
fdur points in front of every
body in the Western Hockey
League's Southern Division,
and the turnabout from Ittbl
to 1D62 in the league - for the
moment at least - is complete.
At the close of last season
Los Angeles fret tod in the
cellar of the Southern Divi

a similar stall in the Northern
division. Now the Blades, dur
ing a five-game win streak,
lop the southern lea and Van
couver is four points in front
in the north.
The Blades chalked up num
ber five Monday night, a 6-1
rout of Edmonton at the Los
Angeles Sports Arena that
was never in doub. There
was no other action in the
league.
Lloyd Haddon of the Blades
rammed in two goals in the
second period and another in
the third to register a hat
trick and exceed by one his
total point production for the
season prior to Monday night.
Bob Solinger added two
goals for Los Angeles as the
Blades coasted to their fourth
win at home without a loss,
H was Edmonton's fifth
straight loss.

To Write Off
1962 Season
Los Angeles - iliPD - The Los
Angeles Rams refuse to write
off the 1962 season as a total
failure despite having won
only one game, and will use
thesr best players in an effort
to win, according to coach
Hariand Svare.
Svare, who took over as in
terim head coach on the resig
nation of Bob Waterfieid, loid
the Southern California Foot
ball Writers Monday why he
could not just forget about
this season and concentrate on
developing young talent for
next year.
"It's not fair to the players
and the fans," he explained.
"A football team can't just
give up. We feel an obligation
to go with our best players
and not use men just to give
them playing experience for
the future."
Svare disclosed some of his
players felt the Baltimore
Colts were responsible for
some key penalties against the
Rams in Sunday's game.
"Some of our men com
plained somebody on the Bal
timore side was calling out
the 'set' signal while Zeke
Bratkowski was giving his

won 14-2.

French Horse Wins
International Race
By SAM FOGG
Laurel. Md. -SSFIi- A close
but clear victory by France's
Match H in the $175,000
Washington International left
U S. "Horse of the Year" hon
ors unsettled today and
smudged up the luster that
usually goes with the Ameri
can title.
Match H, under a masterful
ride by jockey Yves Sain
Martin came through in the
stretch Monday to defeat Kel
so by 1 JengtSis and outclass
two other top U, S- rivals,
Carry Sack and Beau Purple.
What had been anticipated
a decisive meeting that
would settle the Horse of the
Year award in American rac
ing wound up with a French
thoroughbred winning for the
third time in the 1 ith running
of the International.
In the ssile-and-a-half race
on a grass track, Kelso made
a game run for the $70,050
first place purse, but midway
down the stretch Match II
slid inside on the rail and
pulled ahead steadily to take
the honors.
For Kelso, it was the geld
ing's second straight runner-
up finish a! the annual Veter
ans Day event at Laurel, it
also prevented him from soar
ing above the SI million mark
in earnings for his owner,
Mrs. Hichard C. DuPont.
Carry Back, finished third,
Hz lengths back of Kelso,
made a determined effort to
recoup the international pres
tige lost abroad earlier this
year when he came in iflth
in the Arc de Tnomphe m
Paris, The 1981 Keiriueky
Derby winner stayed close to
Kelso until the stretch but
couldn't quite match the pace.
Beau Purple, a co-favorite
betore the event, set a blazing
pace ana was running up
tront with h.eiso and Carry
Back for the first mile, then
slipped badly to a poor 11th.
Kelso's jockey, Ismaei Val-
enzuela, blamed the fast early
pace set by Beau Purple for
the ultimate loss of the race
in the stretch. He said he
knew Match H was coming
strong behind him for the fin
ish "but couldn't do anything
about it."
Sain Martin said that he

There were no serious in

Quarterback Quits
tos Angeles State
Los Angeles - fWt - Some
quarterbacks like to have
their coach call the plays, but
Los Angeles State's Dean
Bond obviously doesn't - and
he quit the team at haistime
during Saturday's game to
prove his point.
Ai odds with coach Bud
Adams during the season, the
senior quarterback ignored a
play sent in by the coach
against Long Seaeh Siale and
called his own pattern. Adams
quickly pulled Bond out of
the game.
Bond went into the locker
room with the team at half
time, but as the rest of the
club rested he got dressed and
left the stadium.
Long Beach State won the
game 23-22.
