what civil defense measures
have been taken in this area.
He pointed out that there
are 250 trained volunteers
ready to be called into action,
including 50 auxiliary re
serves In the sheriff's office.
He noted that there are ap
proximately 100 food stock
piles in readiness throughout
Jackson county.
Regarding fall-out shelters,
he said the office of civil
defense can only recommend.
Such facilities are very lim
ited in this area, primarily due
to the prohobitive cost of in
stallation. Community shelters
would be the most feasible so
lution, representing less of an
individual burden in finan
cing; however, to his knowl
edge, no such shelters are un
der consideration at this time.
Rehabilitation Phase
Mrs. O. E. Eden, chairman
of volunteer services, and
Mrs. Laura D. Porter, execu
tive secretary of the Jackson
county chapter of the Ameri
can Red Cross, explained
briefly the rehabilitation
phase of disaster and what
specifically had been done fol
lowing the Columbus day
storm. Assistance is deter
mined on the basis of need,
not loss, and all assistance Is
an outright gift rather than a
loan.
During the recent Oregon
disaster Red Cross workers
were able to maintain com
munication with many critical
areas.,
Initial contact was made
the first night of the storm
during a' county wide flood
emergency communication
test. A mobile unit set up in
the Red Cross building made
contact witli ham operators,
Mr. and Mrs. John Hall, in
Eagle Point, who were getting
a transmission from the Gold
Beach area. Throughout the
storm the Red Cross office
maintained telephone contact
with the Halls, and messages
were relayed from the Port
land office to the disaster
area in this manner. For
three days this relay repre
sented the only communica
tion with the Gold Beach
disaster victims.
Six actual applications for
assistance have been process
ed through the local office
and work in still being done
on these cases. It is estimated
that the cost of rehabilitating
these families will be close to
$1,000. This money will come
out of the National Red Cross
disaster fund.
Announcements were made
regarding the benefit bridge
luncheon to be conducted at
the Red Cross building on
Thursday, Nov. 15, at 12:1)0
p.m. and the formation of a
new daytime first aid class
beginning on Tuesday, Nov.
13, at 1 p.m.
Mrs. Eden announced that a
Red Cross orientation class
has been scheduled for Tues
day, Dec. 4, at 1 p.m. in the
Red Cross building. This two
hour class is usually conduct
ed only once durins each year
and should be attended by
anyone now participating in
Red Cross work. People who
are interested in performing
service next year are encour
aged to take this opportunity
to familiarize themselves with
the organizat'n and its operation.

tion with assistance from the
Rogue Valley Memorial Hos
pital auxiliary.
Auxiliary volunteers visited
patients throughout the hos
pital Tuesday with applica
tions for ballots.
This service began at the
hospital 2 1 2 years ago.
