near Walong in the extreme
eastern section of the North
east Frontier Agency near
Burma.
A government spokesman
reported Thursday night that
there had been extremely
heavy fighting In the area
Tuesday and Wednesday, with
the Indians turning back three
Chinese attacks.
In one counter-attack on an
attempted flanking action, IS
Chinese soldiers were report
ed killed or wounded and the
rest of the attacking force
driven off.
Walong is situated 16 miles
south of the McMahon Line
which India claims as its
northern border. It commands
the Loliit river valley leading
to the Assam Plains about 80
miles away.
The spokesman reported a
total of five armed clashes
near Walong and another in
the Towang area in Nefa's
western region near the Bhu
tan border.

Mooncraft To Hold

New Mexico Desert

in the next three or four
years a couple of U.S.
astronauts will brake their
descending mooncraft, hover
a while, and then ease down
to a gentle landing.
The scene, however, will
not be a crater or sea of the
moon but the desert outside
White Sands, N.M. The craft,
a bulbous, glass-domed con
traption resembling a giant
bug, will be a test version of
the vehicle which will deposit
two Americans on the lunar
surface a few years later.

will be launched from earth
into orbit around the moon.
There, with two of the astro
nauts aboard, the moon bug
known as LEM will detach
itself from the mother ship.
It will spiral down toward
the moon's surface and, with
retro-rockets blazing, hover
in space until its pilots have
picked a suitable landing
spot. Then it will settle down
upon its skid-like legs and sit
quietly until the explorers are
ready to blast off.
Missions completed, the
two-man team will rendez
vous in lunar orbit with the
mother craft and go back
aboard. Leaving LEM in the
moon's gravitational clutches,
the explorers will then rocket
home to earth.
But long before this can be
undertaken, the Apollo space
craft and its lunar landing
bug must be put through ex
haustive tests in the near
neighborhood of earth.
