Complete New Road West Of Callahan
Vreka - A new road, re
cently completed by Hjertager
Mills of Callahan, Calif., for
the U. S. Forest service will
make deer hunting, camping,
and fishing facilities of the
Salmon River country more
accessible. The road has one
terminus on the Callahan-Ce-cilville
rd. at Six Mile creek
and the other on the Eddy
Gulch - Blue Ridge rd. at
Timber camp.
People hunting the Blue
Ridge area previously had to
go via Cecilville, Crawford
creek and Lafayette point, it
was noted. The new road
shortens access to this high
country by two hours.
Sudden storms often close
these roads around the first
part of November, so people
planning to hunt in this area
should take proper precau
tions, foresters cautioned.

To Report Coverage
Washington -IUPII- The na
tion's radio and television sta
tions soon will be asked by
the Federal Communications
Commission to answer in de
tail how they handled the poli
tical broadcasts during the
1962 primary and election
campaigns.
The FCC notified the sta
tions Wednesday that they
would soon receive question
naires. They were advised to
"retain all records pertaining
to political broadcasts."
10 Conventions With 4,770 Delegates Held in Medford
So far in 1962 Medford has
hosted ten conventions with
4,770 delegates present, ac
cording to Don McNeil, Med
ford Chamber of Commerce
manager.
"During November three
more conventions will visit
here swelling our delegate at
tendance to over 5.000 per
sons," the chamber manager
said.
During 1961 Medford had
17 conventions for a total
delegate attendance of 6,275.
Three of these conventions
had more than 200 delegates
attending and two others had
over 2,000.
"Oregon chambers estimate
pretty accurately that each
delegate spends $18 per day
and his average stay is three
days. This means that 1961
delegates left $338,850 in
Medford and in 1962, $270,
000. The significant feature
of the convention spending is
that it generally occurs in
spring and late fall. This is on
each end of the regular tour
ist season. It signals a real af
finity between tourism and
conventions, M c N e il ex

need to be taken to strengthen
Medford's place in the con
vention picture, he said.

ing a state convention in
Medford, the chamber man
ager explained. Such a book
would contain a check list of
details to cover in preparing
for a large convention. The
Medford Chamber rates high
in the number of services ren
dered conventions, he added.
These include badges, maps
tailored to conventions, pro
grams, registration help, hous
ing surveys, courtesy parking
and many other details.
Local Chapters Effective
"Local members and state
organization chapters can be
most effective in encourag
ing state groups to conven
tion here," McNeil said.
"Many of these state groups
are breaking away now from
Portland as the seat of every
annual convention. So far,
only one Chamber member
representing wayside indust
ries has volunteered to work
on this important Chamber
activity In the last two years.
Recent convention commit
tees have comprised business
leaders in fields other than
the tourist and convention industry."
The chamber has an activa
plan ready to go for the 1963
convention program, but the
great need is for a group of
chamber members who will
volunteer to work on the con
vention committee, he concluded.

Dies in Denver

juries suffered in a plane '
crash at Douglas, Wyo., last

Doctors said Tugman, an 1
Associated Press regional
membership executive, died
without regaining conscious
ness. He was the son of the
late William M. Tugman, and
grew up in Eugene, Ore.
He is survived by his widow
and four children.
Tugman received a bache
lor's degree at Claremont,
Calif., College, and from 1955
to 1980 was a partner with
his father in the weekly news
