Going To Givr Ud?
To the Editor: The reason
we won't have a.measure on
the ballot to establish stand
ard time in Oregon by consti
tutional amendment is we
failed to obtain the required
number of registered voters
on petitions to place the meas
ure on the ballot.
Are we going to give up as
;the time confusionists would
like for us to do? Or are we
going to be more determined
in obtaining justice? Fur
thermore, are we going to re
elect a governor who ignores
the voice of the people?
On Nov. 6 we will have
-these questions answered.
Dellenback, Duncan, and
'Newbry all voted to obey the
law made by the people per
taining to lime in Oregon.

' To the Editor: I'm sure
' many people in Medford will
"agree with me, that the city
public works crews and the
police and lire departments
deserve commendation for
their work during and after
the storm. They did a great
-deal to help people outside
their regular duties and
worked long hours at it.'
It's so easy to dismiss the
.matter from mind aflerward.
I'm not depreciating the pow
er, gas and telephone workers'
- efforts, but the most help, I
feel, was given by the city
people who don't get much
, praise ordinarily.
I don't recall reading an
..editorial on this subject, but
.sometimes I get fed up, and
may have missed it.

.Stephens Qualified
, . To the Editor: Sir, I have
subscribed to the Mail Trib-
. une for a number of years and
I finally decided it was time
to express my opinion and
hope it will be printed in your
; communications column.
I have been reading Ihe ed
itorials and communications
. column carefully since elec-
. lion lime is near. 1 see where
you, Mr. Editor, endorsed
, "De" Leigh as your choice for
phcriff. You said he was best
qualified, more experience
and had a better personality.
I really wonder if exper
ience was weighed in this
case. If Mr. "Dc'' Leigh has
' been a car dealer for the last
-eight years and Beile Steph-
- ens has been an officer, plus
private investigator, for the
last twelve years, do you
-really think qualily and ex
perience was weighed? Mr.
-Stephens has been called upon
by the sheriff's office to help
.in the civil department, has
-stood by as Central Point po
vlice chief while the chief was
filling a military obligation,
and has worked for a number
-of Medford attorneys. Thcre-
fore the man must possess a
lot of personality and the rec
ord itself shows varied exper
ience in police and investiga
tion work.
. 1 do not know cither candi
date, but after reading the
campaign literature and arti
cles in the Mail Tribune, I
weigh both candidates' quali
fication and experience, and
Republican or Democrat, the
-man for sheriff seems to be
Berle Stephens, the best qual-
. ified.

Foolish Mockery
To the Editor: I doubt that
' I can improve on the letters
you published Oct. HO in com
munications against DST from
"C. R. Burril, Ernest M. Cooper
and Mrs. Rose.
1 will instead ask that you,
'Eric Allen, reconsider your
position on DST. Mind, 1 am
not asking you to change your
'personal preference for DST,
but that you throw your in
fluence against Proposition 6
'because of Ihe flagrant im-
morality involved. A sly bit
of political trickery is about
to be put over on the people
of this state.
Up to now you have shown
a fine appreciation for the
integrity of representative
government and the values of
democratic method. Yet Prop
osition 6 as it confronts the
electorate is an outrage on
both.
Its history starts wilh a
clever little hlitzkrirg in the
Legislature to subvert the
many times and dearly stated
will of the people, not to hive
DST. Our Governor then
signed this "five county"
monstrosity into law. He later
said he didn't know what the
result would be.
Now we are asked by peo
ple like you to "end the time
confusion" by voting for some
thing we hae rejected many
times.
Representative government
and democratic mctho- have
been under heavy attack jv
centiy. A NO vote on DST
(whatever one's private pnf.
crence) Mll arUinly boltrr
these institutions A YES vote
will signal the LrGila1nrr
that "anything C"r" a 'id
make a fooli.-n mockeiy ol the
peoples vote
