Salem - HOT - Gov. Mark
Hatfield declined comment to
day on a statement by Secre
tary of State Howell Appling
Jr. and State Treasurer How
ard Be Hon that the cost of
running the state's institutions
would be $10 million greater
if lawsuits prevent the use of
inmate labor on state projects.
All three make up the State
Board of Control, the agency
which runs the institutions.
Organized labor has filed a
suit seeking to prevent the
board from using inmates to
build the new women's prison.
the suit is successful, the
state could be prevented from
using all wards in its institu
tions in various jobs, not just
inmates.
Hatfield was on the losing
side of a board decision some
months ago favoring the use
of inmates in construction of
the women's prison, agreeing
with AFL-CIO spokesmen that
the action amounted to undue
competition with free labor.
Boy Scouts
Troop 108, Boy Scouts of
America, held a Court of
Honor Monday, Oct. 29 at the
First Church of God, 2000
Crater Lake ave., sponsoring
institution.
Scoutmaster Ray Dyche, in
a candlelight ceremony, in
vested ten boys in the rank
of Tenderfoot. The boys were
Syd Brown, Larry Vinyard,
Randy Lewman, George Rice,
Gary Edwards, Randy Moyer,
Lane Tcsdal, Mark Chnss,
Vernon Powell, Gary Powell.
Syd Brown, Jay Avery, Bill
Slandridgc, Tim Warren and
Don Mollcrs were advanced
to the rank of second class
Scout. Six merit badges and
the rank of star Scout were
presented to David Dyche,
senior patrol leader.
The evening ended with a
magic show presented by John
Eads Jr. followed by a time
of fellowship and refreshments.
The troop, oricinally char
tered in April, 1061, how has
an active membership of 18
and serves the Wilson school
area.
