week revolves around our
call.
Hermina S. I realize there
are special problems when
you marry an only child.
That's why I've gone along
with our custom of Sunday-aflernoonsat-Grandma's
for
12 years now. Normally I'm
a peace-loving gal and I'm
only rebelling now because of
our children and friends.
Giving up every single Sun
day for my in-laws has had
some sad results. Our friends
can I ever get us to a barbecue
or picnic and have stopped
inviting us. (Jur four children
are growing older and, after
the first hello, grow fright
fully bored sitting around.
And Irving can't join a bowl
ing club he likes, because the
tournament playoffs are on
Sundays.
I say let's cut down on the
trips and leave some Sundays
open.

They begin thinking of our
next visit to them, six days
hence. Mom wnnripr what in
serve us for supper, and Dad

rights after the six of us hava
tramped through the rooms.

brightening their week this
way is the least we can do.
Dad is a retired school teach
er, Mom is the quiet type, and
their lives revolve around me,
Hermina and their grand
children. There s nothing they
woman i ao lor us.
Things are not as bad as
Hermina paints them. We get
to see our friends during the
week. And I can bowl Tues
day nights.
The Council: Ritual may ba
all right as a religious tool,
but it can turn human rela
tions into an empty shell.
Those processionals and reces
sionals of the young S. fam
ily, occurring week after
week at the same hour, hava
become robot-like. Grandma
and Grandpa wind up the me
chanism and the others dance.
We suggest that the sched-
ule be immediately modified
to every other Sunday, and
that once the older S.'s find
they can survive and even
thrive without the seventh-
day shpt-in-the-arm of visit
ing children, they might even
l experiment and skip two Sun-
days in a row.
These parents appear pos
sessive and Unjust. Their son
is eaucht up in a net of im-
maturity and guilt feelings.
The compulsive visits keep
him forever their "little boy."
It's about time he spoke up
like a big boy. Why shouldn't
he have a chance to join a
bowling club and fraternize
with fellows of like talents
over the weekend? Why
shouldn't Hermina and the
kids join other families for
Sunday afternoon outings?
That's the best time, often
the only time, for families
with children to join forces
for double-fun.
If the parents are mobile,
take them along occasionally.
Break up the old routine of
hello, what's new, let's eat,
good-bye.
As Hermina points out, tha
regular visiting habit grows '
irksome to children once they
pass the high-chair, play-pen .
stage. What's in it for them?
Hours of being seen and not
heard, if they want to please
their elders. Even though
they are learning to sacrifice
and to be kind, they need not
have the lesson drummed into
them the same way week in
and week out. They can ba
kind to Grandma and Grand
pa In many other ways by
writing to them, telephoning,
sending them snapshots.
Homemade handiwork like
raffia picture frames and clay
kittens can be labored over
lovingly as gifts for the elder
ly -ouplc.
If "there s nothing thev
wouldn't do for us." as Irving;
says, how about asking them
to make him a gift of a few
free Sundays?
