To the Editor: These are
comments worthy of consideration:
You can be sure - if a bomb
drops.
If for any reason, nuclear
war should break out, and the
bombs begin flying thick and
fast, be assured that the Air
Force will have things under
control. They have devised a
way of telling when and
where the bombs drop. A re.
cent Associated Press dispatch
from the Air Force Associa
tion's convention in Las Vegas
disclosed tht the Air Force has
set up a network of nuclear
bomb explosion detectors
throughout the U.S. These
have been installed in 99 criti
cal target areas. There are
three detectors, located 11
miles from prime targets, in
every major military and ci
vilian center. Most of them
are mounted on utility poles;
according to the AP dispatch,
"an Air Force spokesman said
that's a good place to put
them because they are made
and serviced by Western Un
ion." The AP dispatch also
reported: "The Air Force said
the network of blast sensors
will give almost Instant notice
of attack in several military
command posts, including the
Pentagon. This information
. . . will help authorities in
making decisions that can
spell the difference between
survival and annihilation.
In case this doesn't sound
comforting, you can always
- get out of town - before it s
too late.
Herman Kahn, as reported
In the "Times," thinks the na-
tion should evacuate cities in
times of international crisis or
'limited hostilities. He advo
cates this not only as a safety
precaution, but also as a bar
gaining weapon in negotia
tions to keep a limited crisis
from erupting into a major
nuclear war.
On the other hand, maybe
you agrco-we've had. enough.
The most sensible remark
of the month was made by
economist Stuart Chase In a
Idler to the editor of the
"Times." He cited the example
of the Algerians who when
threatened by another civil
war, went out Into the streets,
crying "Baraket" - "We've
had enough." Mr. Chase ask
ed: "When will the people of
New York, Moscow, London,
Paris come out on the streets
Hnd cry 'Baraket! We've had
enough of your arms race
which is leading straight to
the end of all of us!' "

erybody: One time back in
the yesterdays I was sort of
a farmerette. Cheaper to hire
a housemaid (hired girl) than
to hire a hired man - so - 1
plowed, dragged, hayed, prun
ed our own orchard and did
any and every outside iHbor.
Just leading up to nrchard
lsts, wealhcr, pears and "good
neighbors", especially.
Some of our neighbors
raised pears and arc in trouble
that means quite a loss.
I once spill some ripe pears
and dried them in a slow
oven. They were as chewy as
dried dates and figs.
I just got the happy thought
that if every household in
Mcdford and 'round about
were to buy pears too ripe to
ship, and (I'm sure we local
people won't mind if Uic fruit
isn't perfect) we could help
the raisers very much and
learn about a real goodie that
you've been missing.
All the orchardisls are fine,
honest people and they nerd
all the help we can give them
now.
Those who are unable lo
pick can help by buying as
many as you can handle.
