And with that simple signa'.
the giant British Broadcasting
Corp. (BBC) almost every day,
and sometimes several times
a day, sets out to save a life,
bring solace or succor to the
dying or to help catch a crim
inal.' It is one of the biggest and
one nf the most successful
"SOS" services operating in
the world today and it has
been going on for 38 year?
on the FFC Home Service ra
dio network.
Starts Without Plan
It started without plan one
day when an official of the
then fledgling BBC agreed to
put a message on the air
seeking the whereabouts o!
a relative of a very sick little
boy. Records of the incident
are hazy but it was the be
ginning of a unique and regu
lar public service conducted
by the state-financed British
radio.
Since that time the BBC
has broadcast without charge
thousands of messages bring
ing relatives quickly to th
bedsides of sick people. In co
operation with the police, it
has put out thousands of ap
peals for witnesses of crimes
and serious accidents, warn
ings against missing danger
ous drugs, and SOS's for spe
cial equipment or medicine to
treat rare diseases.
Anyone may phone up the
BBC and ask them to send
out a message for someone ,
certified dangerously ill. Po
lice verification must be had,
and the patient must be ask
ing to see the relative.
'The last condition is im
portant," said a BBC spokes
man. "Many years ago we re
quested a man's wife to go
to his bedside.
Not Too 111
"The SOS had come from
a doctor who certified that
the patient was dangerously
ill. He was not, however, too
ill to write to us when he
heard of the broadcast to say
If his wife dared to come near
him, he would kick her out "
The spokesman added: "It
Is hard to refuse some re
quests, especially those made
by people who, having Just
come from a deathbed, want
to find relatives for the fu
neral. But we cannot help
them as we never broadcast
when death has occurred.
"A number of visitors, of
ten wives whose husbands
have left them or vice ver?a,
call at Broadcasting House.
But we do not broadcast tor
missing people except at the
request of the police in cases
of crime or suspected crime.
"Some of our callers weep
when we refuse. Others be
come extremely indignant and
ask what they ire paying
their radio license money for.
(British radio and television
ubsrs pay annual fees for each
set. It is this money that fi
nances the BBC operation.)
Broadcast Warnings
Explaining the service fur
ther, the BBC spokesman
said:
"We broadcast warnings to
prevent people from drink
ing poison given to them by a
chemist (druggist). In mistake
for something else; calls for
the return of lost drugs; po
lice messages that might help
in tracing murderers and es
caped lunatics, and the less
sensational appeal for witness
es of accidents that are almost
a daily item of our programs.
"Many people write most
grateful letters over the SOS
messages for relatives. One
man wrote us: "I have al
ways regarded the BBC as a
huge machine operating like
an automaton, and it has fill
ed my heart with gladness to
find myself greatly disillu
sioned.' "
Morse Says Cuban
Action Within Law
Washington -fUPD- Sen.
Wayne Morse (D-Ore.) said
Wednesday the Cuban "quar
antine" falls within the
frkmcwork of International
law.
Morse, chairman of the Sen
ate Foreign Relations Commit
tee's subcommittee on Latin
American Affairs, made the
statement after a four-hour
State Department briefing.
The action was "necessary
to protect the security of the
Western Hemisphere," Morse
said.
Morse singled out for praise
Secretary of State Dean Rusk
and Ambassador dcLesseps
Morrison, ambassador to thn
council of the Organization nf
American States.
He said the two men
showed their leadership In
winning unanimous council
action supporting President
Kennedy's stand on Cuba.
