Disabled Should Check for
Social Security Benefits
Some disabled individuals
in Jackson county may be los
ing social security benefits for
themselves and the'r depend
ents because they cither 'ail
to apply lor them or because
they delay making applira
tion, according to Edward B.
Jacobson, district manager in
Medford.
He reported that a recent
sample survey showed thai
one of every three social se
curity disability applicants
waits more than 18 momh?
before applying for his dis
ability insurance benefits and
so runs a chance of losing
lome payments.
In some cases, he said, peo
ple who are severely disabled
do not realize 'hey are eligi
ble for social security dis
ability insurance benefits. In
other cases the disabled per
son has taken the advice of
relatives, friends, or neighbors
who themselves are not famil
iar with this disability Insur
ance program.
Social security district of
fice representatives will give
whatever assistance is needed
to help people apply for their
disability benefits. The first
step, however, must be taken
by the disabled person or by
someone on his behalf.
"If you know of a severely
disabled person, who has not
yet inquired about getting so
cial security disability bene
fits, tell him to get in touch
with the nearest social securi
ty office without delay," Ja
cobson said.

in a proposed Inter-university
Center for Japanese studies
In Tokyo.
Two University of Oregon
faculty members were in Pa!o
Alto, Calif., recently as the
university's official represent
atives at a planning confer
ence for the establishment of
the center.
They were Dr. Forrest R.
Pitts, assistant professor ot
geography and newly appoint
ed director of the university's
Center for Japanese studies,
and Dr. William E. Naff, as
sistant professor of Oriental
languages.
Host institution for the con
ference was Stanford univer
sily, which has proposed turn
ing its present Center for Jap
anese studies in Tokyo into
an expanded and cooperative
intcrinstitutional center.
- Institutions which partici
pated In the conference in
cluded the University of Ore
gon, Harvard university,
Princeton university, the Uni
versity of Michigan, the Uni
versity of British Columbia,
the University of Washington
and the University of Califor
nia at Berkeley.
These universities share the
distinction of offering three
year courses in the written
and spoken Japanese lan
guage. Following tltis. stu
dents, are required to go to
Japan to further their studies,
which lias led to an increasing
demand for the use of Stan
ford's Tokyo center.
The present center offers
mainly graduate work with
one year of undergraduate in
struction. At the present time,
undergraduate students admit
ted to the center pay the reg
ular Stanford tuition and room
and board costs, with Stan
ford providing the transporta
tion to and from Japan.
Graduate students pay their
own transportation and a nom
inal tuition and make their
own arrangements for room
and board.
