Turnip Has No Glamour;
Tends To It Job-Growing
There was a really big meet
ing going on. In fact it was be
coming more crowded every
day.
In this vegetable society,
contained in the wide field, a
million turnips (give or take
a few hundred) were growing
sold, plump and round.
The turnip hardly attains
anything like glamour, but it
can make up for that discrep
ancy by becoming solid, heavy
and pleasantly flavored. No
turnip aspires fn be anything
different than whi t it is; can't
accomplish a thing except to
vegetate, each in its own little
space in the ground.
Neither does one turnip
care what any other turnip
does; it doesn't even know
that others of its kind are fill
ing out right in the next space,
and in the same row.
Fortunate, probably, that
each is an individualist. Imag
ine how a turnip would worry
if it knew that a thousand
bushels can grow in a single
acre of ground. A thousand
bushels to an acre is big pro
duction, which ever way we
look at it.
No Crowding
Knowing full well how
each little turnip aspires to
attain girth and weight, the
raiser of turnips spaces the
vegetables an adequate dis
tance apart, so one turnip
can't crowd brother - turnip
growing right alongside in its
own little spot of earth. It is a
silent but highly efficient
process, the growth of the tur
nip. Under the influence of
warmth, soil elements and a
little time and moisture, the
turnip pushes the soil away
from itself; forces the earth
back a little to attain growing
room, occupying a space pre
viously taken by soil.
According to its ancestral
beginnings, each turnip will
develop into a "flat-rooted"
or a "long-rooted" species. It
may even be a winter or sum
mer turnip; may even be
Swedish turnip and wind up
in a store to be sold to a lady
who asks for a "rutabaga."
Become Greens
Some turnips will lose their
tops, the leaves later becom
ing turnip greens, with a mild
bite, indicating the vegetable's
relationship with the mustard
family of plants. The turnip
also claims the plebian cab
bage as a relative.
Aside from the men who
come to dig the plump turnip
folks from the ground, the tur
nips have a few enemies
which enjoy nibbling on the
green tops. The flea-beetle
hops around on the leaves,
eatine as he goes. He has well
developed rear legs that
makes jumping a way of loco
motion.
Then there is a turnip-fly
which deposits eggs that hatch
into larvae which joyously
cuts furrows into the body of
the turnip.
So. let's leave them there
and "turnup" the next row.
