Medical Progress
By Dr. Fishbein, Former AIVIA Editor
The world's amazing prog
ress in medicine during the
last half century was review
ed for a Medford audience
Saturday night when Dr. Mor
ris Fishbein, noted medical
editor and writer, spoke for
the Rogue River Valley Knife
and Fork club.
Dr. Fishbein, who was grad
uated from Rush Medical col
lege in 1912, spoke under the
title "Fifty Years of Medical
Progress."
The speaker noted that
when he was just out of med
ical school, most doctors were
general practitioners. Now
there are 53 special branches
of medicine recognized by the
American Medical association.
In those days, one great med
ican discovery might come in
10 years, he said, while in the
last year, there were probab
ly 10 great discoveries, he de
clared. Dr. Fishbein noted that such
diseases as smallpox and ty
phoid have been conquered.
Due to good prenatal care and
the fact that babies are born
in hospitals rather than in
homes the childbirth death
rate is down to a fraction, he
said, and that because of in
noculations and vaccines,
deaths from childhood diseas
es are "at an almost irreduci
ble minimum."
Poliomyelitis Statistics
Speaking of poliomyelitis,
Dr. Fishbein said that in 1926
there were 56,000 cases of
paralytic polio in this country
as compared to less than 500
cases this year.
In time, polio will be as
rare as typhoid and smallpox
now are," he declared. He
noted, however, that in coun
tries where vaccination is not
stressed, there are still occa
sional outbreaks of smallpox.
Tuberculosis, once among
the top causes of death in this
nation, is being conquered
with drugs and new surgical
techniques, Dr. Fishbein re
ported. He said that many TB
sanitariums are either closed
or have been converted into
research institutes for other
diseases or homes for the
aged.
Rheumatic fever, once a ma
jor cause of death among
young children, is now con
trolled with drugs. Pneumo
nia has also fallen from the
list of dangerous illnesses and
today only five out of 100
patients die from pneumonia,
he speaker said.
Diabetes fatal
Fifty years ago diabetes was
almost always fatal in young
children, and now a person
with this disease can expect
to live out a normal life span,
according to Dr. Fishbein. Per
nicious anemia has been con
quered with the use of liver
and liver extracts.
Heart disease, one of the
first causes of death in this
country, will be eventually

controlled, Dr. Fishbein be-
leves. He pointed out. how
ever, that a higher death rate
from heart disease results
partly from the fact that many
of its victims would have died
earlier of other diseases in
years gone by. Heart disease
will continue to be one of
the main causes of death, he
explained, since the heart is
a muscle which is used con
tinuously by the body and that
it degenerates and wears out.
Surgery Advances
Turning to the subject of
surgery, Dr. Fishbein spoke
of the advances made in this
field, such as the transplant
ing of whole organs and the
succesful removal of certain
portions of the body, such as
a lung or the stomach. He
spoke of the great advances
in heart surgery, and of the
fitting of plastic valves into
this organ. The new tech
niques in heart surgery are
one of the "truly great ad
vances in medicine," he de
clared. Speaking of brain surgery,
Dr. Fishbein said that Dr.
Harvey dishing had "found
ed a dynasty" of brain sur
geons who have saved many
persons from death. He noted,
however, that "we still know
too little about the brain and
its functions," such as mem
ory, etc.
Telling of a recent visit to
Russia where he toured hos
pitals and conferred with sci
entists and physicians, Dr.
Fishbein said that the Rus
sians are experimenting with
transplating of the stomach,
heart and nerves, and are us
ing irradiation to solve cer
tain problems in these tech
niques. Russia's Blood Supply
He explained that in Rus
sia the problem of an ade
quate supply of blood for med
ical purposes is solved by tak
ing the blood from persons
shortly after death and stor
ing it for future use.

Dr. Fishbein also spoke of
the success of blood and eye
"banks" and said experiments
with nerve banks are under
way.
The speaker also talked
about new developments in
the use of heat as a therapy,
and declared that the devel
opment of the x-ray was one
of the greatest advances for
medicine and explained some
of its many uses in the pres
ent time.
Dr. Fishbein spoke briefly
about the illnesses of the aged
and said that research is being
done into "why we get old"
and predicted that before long,
scientists would have discov
ered "the secret of life itself."
"Men may even create life,"
he declared, and pointed out
that if this is possible, it will
bring many problems.
"Contemplate what would
happen if a military dictator
could create a whole army,"
he said, and added, "It makes
us pause."
In this vein, he pointed
out that research with the
pituitary gland has led to the
prediction that some time in
the future scientists may be
able to change the color of
the skin. "Who will decide
what color?" he asked.
During the question period
Otto Frohnmayer, Knife and
Fork club president, asked Dr.
Fishbein about the work of
a center in Amsterdam which
is attempting to solve the
problem of communication
among medical men.
Medical Information
Dr. Fishbein, who is asso
ciated with the center, said
that because of the vast num
ber of publications on medical
matters, and the slowness with
which new medical Informa
tion is disseminated, the cen
ter attempts to "digest" the
material and gather it into
magazines for the various spe
cialists. Space exploration is creat

lean research, Dr. Fishbein
said.
Asked about cancer, the
speaker said that research has
brought out much valuable
information and that Russian
scientists have a new drug
which stops the growth of
some types of cancer cells. He
added that the United States
government has a program
under way to open several
medical centers throughout
the country in which women
will be given tests and treat

cancer.
He said that through re
search with mice, it has been

leukemia are virus-caused and
that soon we may be able to
control this virus.
"We soon may have a vac

added.
Dr. Fishbein also talked
about diseases which are caus
ed by auto-sensitization of the
body, causing the body to de
stroy certain tissues. He also
said that work is under way
to isolate the rheumatoid ar
thritis factor which will lead
eventually to control.
The speaker was introduced
