different about the incendiary
bomb she was putting togeth
er. It was spewing fire.
The plant had instructed its
30 employees, mostly women,
on procedures to copo with
such an emergency.
But "instead of putting it
in a specially prepared safety
bucket beside her she panick
ed and threw it aside," said
production manager Leonard
E. Day. "It landed in a tray
containing more bombs," set
ting off a chain reaction ot
explosions.
10-Second .Delay
"Lucikly, the bombs have a
10 second delay before they
go off," Day said, and tha
workers all "managed to get
out."
The bombs were "simulator
ground bursts" which are
used by armed forces for
training purposes. They con
lain two and 2-10 inch flash
powder and measure about
ten inches in length.
A company official said llm
bombs actually simulate thp
sound of shells whistling and
exploding. Foreman Robert
Floyd said the workers heard
a warning whistle the bombs
carry and "emptied out of
there like the world was
about to end."
"I heard one blow, then
blam, blam, blam. The ground
shook. The windows in the
rooms were blowing out, and
1 saw pieces flying off tho
roof," Floyd said.
Burned To Ground
The plant, located south o(
here near the Tennessee-Mis-sippi
line, was burned to tha
ground. The building was
about 100 yards from the rest
of the plant. Loss was esti
mated at about $40,000.
A company official said
there were more than 500 of
the bombs in the building at
the time. Witnesses said pieces
of metal and burning debris
shot from the flames as one
by one the bombs ignited.
"Once thai sort of stuff starts
to burn nothing can stop It,"
a spokesman said.
One of the women working
Inside said everyone "started
screaming and running for the
door.'
"It was the most hideous
experience of my life," she
said.
Abduction Brings
15 Years in Prison
Portland A federal judgs
Wednesday gave two men 15
year prison sentences in con
nection with the June abduc
tion of an Idaho state auditor.
Judge Gus J. Solomon
handed the sentences to Ray
mond F. Peper, 35, and Bailey
D. Lake, 33. The sentences
were reduced from life Tha
two men underwent a 90-day
observation period at a Cali
fornia correctional Institution.
The Iwo men were cap
tured near Hood River, Ore.,
shortly after Samuel G. Pet-
terson, 37, was robbed and
abandoned in a field 17 miles
cast of The Dalles. Pcltersoti
had given the two men a ride
near Caldwell, Idaho, and
said they forced him to drive
them to Oregon.
