rather had settled in Medford
as "a matter of choice."
"I decided to live in Med
ford because I had faith in its
future," he said, "and now,
20 years later, 1 still have that
same faith."
Born In Ohio
The 51-year-old candidate
was born and reared in Ak
ron, Ohio, where he was edu
cated in the public schools,
and attended night classes for
seven years at the University
of Akron while working dur
ing the day at the Goodrich
Rubber company.
During World War II, Dun
levy moved to Medford as a
member of the 353rd Combat
Engineers which was station
ed at Camp White. Assigned
to public relations work, he
was appointed editor of the
Camp White "Grenade," the
camp's weekly newspaper,
and was also chief announcer
at the camp radio station.
Following his discharge in
April 1946, Dunlevy went to
work for radio station KMED
as a staff announcer, and was
promoted to station manager
three months later.
"During the four years I held
that position, I had the oppor
tunity to contact nearly every
merchant and businessman in
Medford," Dunlevy said, "to
help them with their sales
promotions and advertising."
Move to Station KYJC
In 1950, he moved to radio
station KYJC as station man
ager, a position he held until
1957, when he resigned to ac
cept the managership of the
Rogue Valley Country club,
where he Is now employed.
During his tenure with
KYJC, Dunlevy became inter
ested in civic affairs and

various projects. He was elect
ed to the city council (he s
currently serving his sixth
year) and twice was elected
council president. He is also
council representative on the
county board of health.
"I want particularly to
stress that out of 140 meet
ings, I have only missed sev
en, for a 95 per cent atten
dance record," he said.
"Further, I have never
once abstained from voting on
any issue, regardless of what
it was," he said. "I have called
them as I saw them, even
though it meant voting con
trary to some particular in
terests at the time."
Attention to Future
Turning his attention to
Medford and its future, Dun
levy said blight is not just of
local concern, it is a "national
problem."
He admitted that parts of
the city are decaying, but
pointed out that the cure for
the blight can be found, in
part, in improved parking in
the downtown core area, in
renovating several old build
ings in the business district,
and in increased sales promo
tion work by the merchants.
"The blight cannot con
tinue," he said, "Medford is
the economic hub of southern
Oregon and northern Cali-
ornia, and as the state's No.
2 market, serves some 370,000
people in a 10-county area. 1
Dunlevy predicted the busi
ness district "will expand" so
that it covers the whole core
area, instead of being coin
posed of several smaller dis
tricts. Not Taxpayer's Problem
"Parking is not the tax
payer's problem," he empha
sized, "but the city adminis
tration should assist the mer
chants in a cooperative man
ner to help them solve the
problem."
The office of mayor Is most
ly a "public relations" posi
tion, he said. The mayor
should serve as a kind of
'Mr. Medford" to help create
a favorable image of the city
with tourists, potential resi
dents and with industries
which might be interested in
coming to the area, Dunlevy
said.
"I would work to help build
that kind of an image for
Medford," he said.
Important Problem&
The candidate cited the
three most important prob
lems facing the city as: 1.
Development of the city ? busi
ness district. 2. Institute a
cooperative effort with the
county to develop the munici
pal airport into a regional air
port. 3. "Within economic
reason" to further the spirit
ual, recreational and cultural
growth of Medford to induce
members of the younger gen
eration to stay In Medford
rather than leaving for some
other area after their educa
tion is completed.
Prior to Dunlevy's talk,
George Joyce, trainmaster for
Southern Pacilic, and candi
date for the city council from
Ward 3, warned that people
"can't be complacent in mod
ern society."
Joyc"! cited evidence of the
city's growth, and said he
feels the city "is moving." If
elected, Joyce said he wo'ild
work to further the city's de
velopment. Chairman William Long
more stated that if any other
candidates for city council
wish to speak to the Round
table, they should contact him
to discuss scheduling dates.
